Nelson Panciatici in the rhythm at Spa Francorchamps

The KMP Racing team and their manager Bruno Besson were very confident when they reached the difficult track of Spa Francorchamps for the World Series by Renault. Nelson Panciatici would confirm this with a position in the top ranks right from the free practice on Friday where he finished 5th.

For the first session of qualifiers, Nelson managed to reach an excellent 4th place in one lap before being blocked, which was a shame because the first line was in view!

Nelson Panciatici then fought hard for 3rd place right up to the last lap of race 1 when he was overrun and crossed the line in 5th position.

For the qualifiers the next day, the drivers of KMP Racing pulled off a combined attack with Nelson 8th and his co-driver Anton Nebylitskiy 9th, but fell foul of the traffic once more and the young Frenchman would be left with a few more regrets.

In race 2, after a lively start which saw him lose a few places, Nelson Panciatici lined up some fast laps before taking a late pit stop which should have seen him come out in the lead positions. Unfortunately, he was immobilised for some long seconds following a problem with the gear box selector and came out in 11th place. Nelson would eventually finish a very disappointing 10th considering the extremely fast times he had clocked at that point in the race.

Nelson Panciatici: “We had the speed but success evaded us all weekend, whether in the qualifiers or the race. The championship is far from over though, and we’re still in this despite everything. The new points allocation system also means we just need a good weekend to be back in the running, we just need to grab the opportunities! »

“Nelson is still 5th in the championship despite our problems,” added Bruno Besson, the Team Manager for KMP Racing, “ we have got to work hard and do everything we can to eliminate any unknowns because we’re still in this to win. Nelson had two very good races and the ranking does not reflect his performance at all, his race times prove it. Nelson also spends a lot of time with his engineer and the two of them have really hit it off, it’s their strong point. I’m optimistic for what’s to come even though I know it won’t be easy considering the exceptionnally high level of the championship this year but we have nothing to envy the others, up to us to attract our success! »

The next meeting in the World Series by Renault will be on the F1 Monza track on the 13, 14 and 15 May.

Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) scored his second victory of the weekend at the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. At the start of the sixth season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series, also the second round of the new FIA Formula 3 International Trophy, he took the lead and went on to win with a margin of 5.114 seconds from Marco Wittmann (Signature). With Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport) in third place, three drivers from as many different teams made it onto the podium. Merhi extended his points’ lead with his second race win of the weekend. He is now 19 points clear of his compatriot Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam), who finished fourth.

Roberto Merhi was the man to beat at Hockenheim. The Spaniard won the first race on Saturday and was also the fastest driver in the field in the third encounter. His third victory of the 2011 season was never in jeopardy. Behind him, Marco Wittmann had to fight against Felix Rosenqvist to defend his second place in the closing stages. He eventually finished 0.497 seconds ahead of the Swede.

In the newly founded FIA Formula 3 International Trophy, Roberto Merhi is leading after two races with a margin of 30 points over Daniel Juncadella. Daniel Abt (Signature) is third, tied on points with Juncadella.

Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “Everything was perfect. My start was good, I was able to pull a gap right away and I could finish the race without having to push it to the limit. Thus, I could save the tyres during the race.”

Marco Wittmann (Signature): “I am not happy, because we weren’t as good as we were in the first race on Saturday. Now, we have to analyse the race in order to close the gap to the front runners.”

Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport): “I am happy with third place. Too bad that the race is only 40 minutes long. Had it been 45 minutes, I would have ended up second. My strategy was being quick towards the end of the race, while Marco Wittmann in front of me was better in the opening stages.”

Felipe Nasr

Going Up! Felipe Nasr is on fire. The 18-year old from Brasilia leads the 2011 British Formula 3 Championship after two rounds. Managed by Steve Robertson of Raikkonen fame, Nasr started his 2011 campaign in quite a style; winning two of the three races – and podium in the third – at the season opener at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.

At Oulton Park last weekend he extended his championship lead by winning the final race of the weekend plus second place in the opening race. Nasr drives for Carlin Motorsports and is regarded as the next Brazilian sensation.

In his rookie British F3 season last year he finished fifth overall and took maiden win at Rockingham.

Nasr made his single seater debut in the final race of the 2008 Formula BMW Americas series at Interlagos and scored a podium finish. Crossing the pond he won the talent-laden 2009 Formula BMW Europe Championship, scoring five wins and visiting the podium in 14 of the 16 races. His points tally was over a hundred more than second place driver in the championship, Daniel Juncadella.

His karting career, which began at the age of seven, is equally impressive with numerous championship victories both in native Brazil and Argentina.

Please enjoy our conversation with Felipe Nasr and his manager Steve Robertson on podcast 499.
