A 1-2 for Prema at the Red Bull Ring

Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) won the tenth season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 4.326 kilometres long Red Bull Ring that was re-opened in mid-May. With a margin of over one second, he crossed the finish line ahead of his team-mate Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam), who ended up second. Marco Wittmann (Signature) completed the podium upon the Formula 3 Euro Series’ return to Austria. With his success, Merhi extended his lead in the Euro Series drivers’ standings. He now has 152 points to his tally. With 119 points, Marco Wittmann remains runner-up in the drivers’ standings.

Starting from second place, Roberto Merhi took the lead from pole-sitter Daniel Juncadella. In the following 26 race laps, the Spaniard didn’t make any mistakes and drove an undisputed victory home. For 20-year old Merhi, it was the fourth season win in the Formula 3 Euro Series.

Behind the top 3, returnee Tom Dillmann (Motopark) came out on top after a nice battle with Nigel Melker (Mücke Motorsport). The Frenchman overtook the best-placed Euro Series’ rookie on lap 16. Daniel Abt (Signature) was classified sixth.

Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): “The race was really good and also relatively easy. It was great fun. Initially, I was able to pull a little gap over Daniel, but in the second half of the race, he closed up again. The set-up of our car was great, too, as our first and second place show.”

Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): “I am happy with second place, even though I would have liked to win from pole position. However, my start, which was the key to victory today, wasn’t very good. On my starting grid position, I didn’t expect so much grip, but now I know what it is like and hopefully will do better in tomorrow’s third round.”

Marco Wittmann (Signature): “We were already struggling in qualifying and in the race, the Prema Powerteam cars were again quicker than ours. Third place is not what we were dreaming of. Now, we have to continue working hard in order to return to winning ways.”

Tomczyk strong in the rain – Pole at the Red Bull Ring

Spielberg. A great comeback of the DTM in Austria. For the first time since 2003, the fans again trekked to a DTM qualifying at the Red Bull Ring that was re-opened in mid-May. In front of the unique scenery in the Styrian mountains, German Audi driver ended up fastest and claimed pole position in a thrilling qualifying. On a wet track and in difficult conditions, the 29-year old completed the 4.326 kilometres long undulating track in 1:40.001 minutes. “Pole position was our goal after everything went very well so far this weekend. Everything has to fit together in order to achieve a good lap time. Apparently, that has worked out today. It is the best position to win a race”, said the delighted Audi driver, who will be starting a DTM race from first place for the eighth time in his career. Tomczyk, who is currently third in the points’ standings, is racing a 2008-spec Audi A4 DTM this season.

Only 0.325 seconds separated Oliver Jarvis (Audi) from pole position. In second place, the Brit completes the front row of the grid. Third place for Mercedes-Benz driver Ralf Schumacher was the reason for great joy among the fans. The 35-year old ex-Formula 1 driver already started from third place into the season opener at Hockenheim. “I had already forgotten how beautiful it is here. It was difficult as the weather changed all the time. Especially at such a fast track, aquaplaning is dangerous. Being third provides good opportunities for tomorrow. But we also have to see what kind of weather is awaiting us. Tomorrow, many friends and my family will be here and I hope that it will be a good race”, said Schumacher.

Italian Edoardo Mortara (Audi) was also very happy. The DTM novice already made it into the second row of the starting grid in his third qualifying already. Following tenth place on the grid at Hockenheim and seventh at Zandvoort, he ended up fourth in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring.

Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller, winner at Zandvoort and runner-up in the drivers’ standings, was fifth fastest in qualifying. With his AMG Mercedes C-Class, Maro Engel was sixth, followed by Timo Scheider (Audi). A trio of Mercedes-Benz drivers, Gary Paffett, Jamie Green and Christian Vietoris, completed the top ten.

After pole positions at Hockenheim and Zandvoort, a series came to an end for points’ leader Bruno Spengler. The Mercedes-Benz driver only ended up twelfth. “Today, I was struggling for grip. Twelfth place is not great, but nevertheless, I will have fun in the race”, Spengler said after qualifying.

For the second time in a row, Audi driver Mattias Ekström failed to make it into the second qualifying heat. In heavy rain, the Swede slid into the tyre barriers at the pitlane entry and damaged his car in such a way that qualifying was over for him. “There is a new surface on the track in the pitlane entry. There, I had aquaplaning and I was only a passenger in my own car”, said Ekström, who has to start the race from last place.

Motorsports Mondial with Nasir Hameed and…

Special repeat interview with JR Hildebrand.

GP3 team MW Arden dominate in Hungary.

Bottas quickest this afternoon, but Australian team MW Arden top three out of four sessions at GP3 Series mid-season test in Hungary.

The cool morning temperatures at the Hungarian track on day 2 of mid-season testing meant when the lights turned green and the pitlane opened that all the drivers fed out onto the track for their initial installation laps, before swiftly returning to the pits and switching to new tyres.

James Calado was the first driver to post a quick time on new rubber, but soon after the Lotus ART driver found himself swapping fastest laptimes with Status Grand Prix’s Alexander Sims, MW Arden’s Mitch Evans and Jenzer Motorsport’s Nico Müller – the latter setting a laptime over half a second quicker than yesterday’s fastest man Lewis Williamson. But, with less than thirty minutes gone in the session, the Scot was back on top and continuing his good form from the previous day. Müller was bumped down to second ahead of Calado, Evans, Marussia Manor Racing’s Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Carlin’s Conor Daly.

For the remainder of the session, times were mostly static as once again the teams largely used the three hours of this morning to develop a good understanding of the Pirelli P Zero soft slick tyres and concentrate on setups rather than quick times. Williamson’s quickest laptime of 1:37.528 remained unbeaten, and Quaife-Hobbs improved to second. Müller, Calado, Evans, Sims, Daly, Tom Dillmann, Simon Trummer and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top ten. Quaife-Hobbs was later demoted to fifth after it was deemed he exceeded track limits whilst setting his quickest time.

The afternoon session was busy with teams working on race simulations and setups ahead of Round 3 in Valencia, Spain at the end of the month. Once again Williamson was first to top the time sheet for MW Arden, and for the first hour the Scotsman was closely followed by Dillmann, Evans and Series leader Nigel Melker. The Status Grand Prix duo of Antonio Felix Da Costa and Sims then hit the track and moved up to third and fourth respectively. Laptimes were mostly static until midway through the session when Müller knocked Williamson into second, but it was short lived as the Scot was quick to fight back and reclaim his place at the top.

As the final hour approached, the temperature dropped and the long anticipated rain arrived at the Hungaroring. However, the wet weather was short lived and soon enough the cars trickled back out on track during the final hour. With the chequered flag in sight, it looked like Williamson had topped his second session of the day, but in the dying minutes Lotus ART’s Bottas put together the perfect lap to snatch the top spot on his final flying lap in 1:38.410. Williamson had to settle for second ahead of his teammate Trummer, Müller, Vainio and the third MW Arden car of Mitch Evans.

GP3 Series will be back on track on 16-17th June for the second mid-season test in Valencia, Spain.

Red Line Oil Series Round #3 kicks off summer

Summer is approaching quickly and the weather forecast for next weekend’s race is looking great! Round #3 of the Red Line Oil Karting Championship opens the summer months on the very popular Reverse National configuration of the Infineon Raceway’s International Karting Center. Later this month Infineon Raceway will host the Nascar Sprint Cup Save Mart 350 but for now it’s all about the karters. Come on out June 11-12th and enjoy great weather and even better racing!

Saturday will be an open practice day from 10:30 to 5:30 with registration and pre-tech available on Saturday. We will have a slow session from 10-10:30 for engine break in or new drivers if anyone needs it. The Sunday race program will begin at 8:20 with one round of practice sessions, followed by qualifying, two 8 lap Pre-Finals and 15 lap Mains starting at 2:40. Admission for spectators is $10, $5 for kids 8 and under. Race Entry is $100, transponder rental $10 and Saturday Practice is $50. For more information on the Red Line Oil Karting Championship go to www.redlineoilkarting.com or contact race director Ric Shaw at racedirector-ric@hotmail.com

Each race the series chooses one class to be the Go-Pro featured main event. The winner of this race receives a Go-Pro HD Hero mini camera. The Go-Pro featured class this race will be the ever competitive Senior Rotax class. Round #2 winner, Niki Luna, has his mind set on making it two wins in a row. It might not be that easy as Round #1 winner Carlos Calderon will be back in the field after a one race hiatus with some plans of his own. As always the Senior Rotax division has many drivers that could win on any given Sunday. Last years championship runner up, Raymund Bustamante Jr, is ready to bust out with his first win of the season. The return of TJ Fisher will be happening as well. TJ had that great run at the Gatorz COTA round #5 at Infineon in February when he took the impressive victory in the rain. Sean McDonald is now concentrating solely on the Senior Rotax class and has high hopes of returning to his top form. Fast improving Andrew Colombini and Jarret Lile will also try to keep moving up the leader board and try to put their karts in a position to log their first win at Infineon. The Senior Rotax race will, as always, have one heck of a battle brewing with the winner taking home a GoPro Hero HD mini-camera.

After only two races, the Sanzaru Games Mini-Max championship is shaping up to be the battle between 2010 champ Michael Avansino and Round #2 winner Michael Michoff. Add in the return of Scott Huffaker and the improving sister duo of Annie and Toni Breidinger this race will probably come down to the wire yet again. The Mini-Max race will again feature tough competition and of course the $50/$30/$20 cash prize money for the top three in the main.

Rotax Masters now has three drivers battling for top honors at this point in the season. After a convincing win last month from Jerry Pretti, he joins Cameron Evans and an improving Scott Ripslinger as the top drivers in this highly competitive class. Veteran Bob Hurst is quickly getting up to speed with his Rotax power plant so look to see Bob challenging for the top honors very soon. Series newcomer Ken Santos continues to get his grove back after taking several years off of kart racing and should be a contender to look out for. There has also been a rumor out there that highly decorated Masters driver Rob Soares will make an appearance. Rob likes the reverse layout and should be right there to challenge for the win as well.

The 80 Masters field is getting interesting with 2010 champ Tom Nelson getting some real competition from several drivers. Bob Lesnutt returned to winning form in Race #2 and Greg Richter rebounded from a rough Race #1 to take a second place last month and put his stamp on being a championship contender. Don’t count out Roger Cornwall when it comes to contending for the championship either.

The IAME TaG class has pulled in good entry numbers so far this year with Don Rocci taking the first two races. But look for the pressure on Don to come from Bryce Guzman after his 3 year lay off from racing. With Bryce’s strong 2nd place finish in Race #2, he is close to being in top form again and ready to contend.

As always the Reverse National layout should bring out several Stock Moto shifters to this event as usual. New to the Red Line Oil Karting Series this year is the addition of the SKUSA spec classes S2, S4, TAG senior, TAG junior and TAG masters. All classes run the SKUSA MG white compound. We should see good battles in S2 and S4 just like the last two races. The TAG classes have not gotten much play so far this year but the series will continue to support them knowing that there are a ton of Tag karts out there that need a good place to race. Infineon Raceway provides some of the best racing any where in the USA and we are finally starting to see some of the larger fields of old.

With only two more Norcal Rotax races before the Rotax Nationals in July, expect to see lots of Rotax drivers working hard to get into top race shape as they prepare for the first western US location of the Rotax Nationals in a few years. If you haven’t had the chance to try the Red LIne OIl karting series yet, come on out and see what you’ve been missing!

Nelson Panciatici in Top Five in Monaco

Monaco’s circuit layout demands absolute concentration, the smallest error can be fatal. It is the mythical circuit all drivers dream one day of winning or at least showing their worth. That’s what Nelson Panciatici achieved when he crossed the finishing line in a nice 5th place in the Formula Renault 3.5 race.

In the one and only free practice session, Nelson Panciatici concentrated on reaching a maximum number of laps to be well prepared for the qualifiers. Time spent on the track here is essential to hope for a good qualifier, the starting position is key because overtaking during the race is difficult.

In Monaco, the qualifiers are divided into two groups and Nelson Panciatici made his group’s qualifying runs a heated race to the finish. In the top three right until the end of the session, he finally finished in 4th place synonymous with a 7th place on the starting grid.

The next day, Nelson Panciatici produced a solid and intelligent performance in the race, he made no faults and avoided all traps to finish in a good 5th place. It’s a shame Anton Nebylitskiy had to abandon because he was also having a good race.

Nelson Panciatici: “I arrived in Monaco with the level intention of fighting for the podium and so I’m a bit disappointed with the result. We were fast in the qualifiers, really close to the best, but in the race our potential did not get us closer to the podium. In these circumstances, our 5th place is positive because it puts us back in the championship. We worked well with Adrien, my engineer, we were just a bit short on performance which would have put the pressure on our adversaries. I got a lot of pleasure driving on this circuit!”

For Bruno Besson, Team Manager of KMP Racing, his statement is practically the same: “We worked well during the free practice session to prepare for the qualifiers and even though Nelson was in the higher group, I think we could have finished 2nd or 3rd, but he made a small mistake in his last lap. Nelson then ran a good race without making any mistakes, which isn’t easy in Monaco. We are going to have two important meetings where we will need to make it to the podium to keep rising in the championship.”

The next meeting for Formula Renault 3.5 will be on the Nurburgring track, the 17, 18 and 19 June next in the context of the World Series by Renault.
