DANIEL JUNCADELLA WINS TURBULENT RACE AT ZANDVOORT…

Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) came out on top in an action-packed Formula 3 Euro Series race at the 4.307 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort. Behind the Spaniard, who is also leading the drivers’ standings, William Buller (Carlin) finished second on a track that was drying out. Pascal Wehrlein (Mücke Motorsport) followed in third place and was also the best-placed rookie.

Due to the asphalt still being wet, the race was started behind the safety car for safety reasons. At the re-start, Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) ran into the rear of the car of race leader Sven Müller (Prema Powerteam), forcing both of them to retire. The second safety-car phase followed, in which almost all drivers changed from rain to slick tyres. At the following re-start, Juncadella, who like Buller and Wehrlein, had been on slicks from the start, was in the lead. Sandro Zeller (Jo Zeller Racing) defended his second place, until a group of four drivers started to attack from behind. In the process, Michael Lewis (Mücke Motorsport) and Tom Blomqvist (ma-con Motorsport) collided and were sidelined. The third safety-car phase didn’t upset Daniel Juncadella, who safely drove his race win home.

Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): “I knew that the track here dries out quickly and therefore took the risk of starting with slicks. It was very good for me that the safety car came out after the accident of Raffaele and Sven, because that allowed the track to dry out even further. I just wasn’t too happy with the final safety-car phase, because my margin was gone after that. But it was enough like that as well and I am happy.”

William Buller (Carlin): “On the first few laps, I tried to stay on track with the slicks more than anything else. After that, the asphalt dried out more and more. After my weekend here didn’t start too well, I am very happy with my second place.”

Pascal Wehrlein (Mücke Motorsport): “Starting only ninth after a qualifying that wasn’t so good, we opted for slicks. I lost time behind Sandro Zeller, so that Felix Rosenqvist could overtake me. On the final lap, I got my third place back again.”
