F1weekly podcast # 501 - May 9, 2011

Podcast number 501 Grand Prix of Turkey recap.

The “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” 2010, last weekend took part in the second leg of the ALPS Championship on the IMOLA track and stepped up on the third podium for the first race after a nice fight for victory. It seems Italian air suits our young driver well!

Paul Loup CHATIN still had a few regrets though because he broke the anti-roll bar with his second set of new tyres, which prevented him from improving his position. He had to be satisfied with a 3rd and 4th place on the grid for the two races.

After a nice first race, the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” started the second race with high ambitions. Blocked behind 3rd though he had to pass him quickly in order to get on the “right carriage” and not lose the lead. Unfortunately, when he took on the driver in front, Paul Loup CHATIN found himself in the dirt and span out. Taking off again more than 10 seconds behind the last car, he got back up to a nice 6th place.

Actually 5th in the general provisional ranking of the ALPS Championship, Paul Loup CHATIN, “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” 2010, believes in his hopes for victory at the end of the season:

“Even if I lost some precious points in the second race, I still have every chance in the championship. We’re very competitive and the championship has a way to go. This second podium boosts my confidence and the times I made in the race bode well for the future. I hope to climb on the podium again for the next race which will run on the PAU track and rise some more in the general ranking of the championship.”

Laurent FRADON, Director of EUROFORMULA, is also very satisfied:

“Paul Loup again showed all his qualities this weekend, most notably when he moved up from last to 6th position and scored more points in the championship. He has the essential mind set to hope for a career in motorsport. Victory isn’t far away and I think he’ll be able to make it a reality in the next races.”

Next meeting for Paul Loup CHATIN on 23 and 24 May on the legendary track of PAU where his heart will be set on reaching the top step of the podium.

Turkish Delight For Vettel

Photo. Reuters

Istanbul. Formula 1. Four races, four poles and three wins. Welcome to the new Vettel order. The reigning world champion put in another flawless and commanding performance for 58 laps to win the Turkish Grand Prix and now leads the championship with 93 points.

“You beauty, Seb,” congratulated team principal Christian Horner on radio and said later, “It is a sweet victory today; excellent from the drivers, fantastic pit stops, great strategy and a great race.”

Vettel bounced back strongly from his Friday crash to grab pole and victory number 13 of his still young F1 career.

Teammate and fellow front row starter Mark Webber joined him on the podium in second place. Back-to-back podium finishes has put Mark third in the championship with 55 points. The Australian also recorded the fastest lap of the race, 1:29.703, on lap 48.

Ferrari star Fernando Alonso started his fourth consecutive race of the season from fifth on the grid and made his first podium appearance this year in third.

Lewis Hamilton, winner of last round in China, was fourth, placing him second in the championship with 59 points.

Nico Rosberg again out-qualified and out-raced his illustrious teammate, Michael Schumacher. Much was expected from Mercedes driver after Rosberg started from third on the grid behind the two Red Bull cars. High five was all he could achieve in the end.

Jenson Button paid the price for a three-stop strategy in the words of team principal Martin Whitmarsh, and finished sixth.

Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov both brought their Renaults in the points, the German finishing ahead of his Russian teammate after some too-close-for-comfort dicing between the two.

Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi was ninth for Toro Rosso and Kamui Kobayashi put in his usual spirited drive to finish tenth and pick up the final championship point, very impressive after starting the race from back of the grid.

P2. Frenchman Romain Grosjean won Saturday’s feature race from pole position. He was pushed hard in the closing stages by Sam Bird. The Englishman landed second and third was another French driver, Jules Bianchi.

Sunday’s sprint race winner was Stefano Coletti of Monaco. Dutch driver Giedo van der Garde was second and Bird came in third.

In the championship, Grosjean and Bird share 13 points each. Behind them with 10 points each are Coletti and Garde.

GP3. Second-year Dutch driver Nigel Melker won the first race of the weekend on Saturday. Italian Andrea Caldarelli was second and French pole-sitter Tom Dillman was third.

Sunday’s race two saw victory for English rookie Alexander Sims. Dane Michael Christensen was second and Melker made his second trip of the weekend to the podium in third.

Formula 1 and other weekend delights

Sweet and Sour for Sebastian is Hamilton’s Chinese take away.

It had to happen. Sooner or later. Practice and qualifying was business as usual for Sebastian Bull and Red Bull team. The winner of both the opening two races of the season, Australia and Malaysia, was looking good for his third win in a row from his third successive pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Jenson Button added additional spice to the show by out-qualifying teammate Lewis Hamilton to start from the front row. When the lights went out in Shanghai it was John’s boy who shot into the lead, Hamilton also passed Vettel on the opening lap. Then during his pit stop Jenson Button pulled into the Red Bull pit before realizing his mistake.

After making his second and final pit stop Vettel had only to worry about his tires lasting the remaining laps. The worry became a major concern when the object in the mirror, Hamilton’s McLaren, became larger and larger. Button also had the same problem as Mark Webber was on a mission trying to make up from his yet another poor qualifying position. The Australian started 18th after failing to pass Q1.

Hamilton, who made the last of his three pit stops on lap 38 of the 56 lap race, hounded Vettel for a few laps before passing the Red Bull to take the lead and charged to his first win of the season.

Webber was able to catch up and pass Button for a podium appearance. Button was fourth and Nico Rosberg scored the first points of the season for Mercedes. The 25-year old son of 1982 champion also led the race twice when the front runners stopped for fresh rubber.

Felipe Massa was sixth and teammate Fernando Alonso seventh. Schumacher was eighth.

Vitaly Petrov, after his high flying Sepang stunt, landed in ninth place and the final point was scored by Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi.

Jaime Alguersuari was the only retirement from the 24 starters, victim of wheel coming off after a pit stop.

In the championship, Vettel leads with 68 points. Hamilton is now second with 47 points. Button on 38 points is third, one point ahead of Webber. Alonso completes the top five on 26 points.

The F1 circus now heads for a Turkish delight to start the European leg, even though the magnificent Istanbul track is located on the Asian side of this great historic city.

World Series by Renault

It has happened. American Alexander Rossi won the opening round of the series at Aragon in Spain. The northern California native now leads the championship after taking second place in race two of the weekend. Victory went to Kevin Korjus of Estonia.

British F3

Mega talent in the making at Monza. The season opener at the Autodromo saw Brazilian driver Felipe Nasr score two wins and a second from three races of the weekend. He is managed by Steve Robertson and his father. The same duo discovered Kimi Raikkonen.

Formula 2

Silverstone season opener saw victory for Italian Mirko Bortolotti; he leads the championship after second place finish in race two, which was won by Spanish driver Miki Monras.

Indy Cars

Mike Conway was the winner in the streets of Long Beach for Andretti Autosports. The ex-British F3 champion previously raced in GP2.

The Lights version was won by Conor Daly; he is also competing in GP3 this season.

Quali - April 16, 2011

Pole position becoming routine for Sebastian Vettel.

Mark Webber unable to get though Q1 stuck in P18

Jenson Buton extremely happy with a front row start.

Petrov brings out a red flag and compromises Heidfelds lap.

Petrov: “I don’t know, after the second or third corner something started to be wrong with the car.

I tried to go full throttle but the car was not working, I tried to change the gears and that didn’t work also. We need to check to analyze what happened.

But to be honest I am very, very disappointed because we made a big step on set-up. We improved quite a lot from yesterday because it was really nice to drive the car. It would have been very interesting to see what would have happened in Q3.”

Heidfeld: “It’s quite frustrating to be starting from P16 because I don’t think it’s a fair reflection of our pace. We were always going to do one run on the soft tyres in Q2, but the red flag made the last few minutes on Q2 very busy. You really needed to be first in the queue at the end of the pit lane because there was not much time to get around and cross the line before the end of the session. I managed to do one final lap, but I was stuck in traffic and I couldn’t get a clean lap. As I said, our race pace is definitely better than our grid position, but starting from P16 is not going to be easy. I think it’s a track where you can overtake so hopefully I can make a good start, like in the previous two races, and fight for points.”

Nigel Melker quickest on final pre-season test day

RSC Mücke Motorsport’s Nigel Melker was the fastest man out on track at Circuit de Catalunya today, after setting the best time of 1:37.882 on the final day of 2011 official GP3 Series testing.

Once again the teams had to contend with low temperatures at the Spanish circuit. When the lights turned green and the pitlane opened, the drivers all fed out onto the track for their initial installation laps in the cool conditions. Jenzer Motorsport’s Nico Müller briefly held on to the top spot before Lotus ART’s Valtteri Bottas continued his good form and knocked the Swiss into second, with James Calado soon following suit.

Just before the thirty minute marker, the teams began switching to fresh rubber and the times started to drop consistently. Alexander Sims was first to get to grips and post a quick time which was swiftly beaten by his Status Grand Prix teammate Antonio Felix Da Costa. RSC Mücke Motorsport’s Michael Christensen slipped into third ahead of Tech 1 Racing’s rookie Andrea Caldarelli, Bottas and Calado. During the next hour, Marussia Manor Racing’s Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, Da Costa and Sims all took turns at the top until RSC Mücke Motorsport’s Nigel Melker clocked a laptime quick enough to put him ahead of the field. The Dutch driver’s time went unbeaten for the remainder of the session. Sims finished second fastest ahead of Müller, MW Arden’s Mitch Evans and Quaife-Hobbs.

Despite a threat of rain over the lunch break, the afternoon stayed dry and bright for the final pre-season test session of 2011. For the first half of the session, it was Valtteri Bottas heading up the field with a 1:39.773 lap until midway through the afternoon when Melker edged ahead of the field once more. As usual, the Spanish track was slower in the afternoon than the morning, giving drivers another opportunity to concentrate on race simulations and setups. The teams were also able to evaluate the tyre degradation and see how it will play a role in the upcoming season.

The final hour of the day saw Quaife-Hobbs take over at the top of the time sheet with a 1:38.625 lap, and with the rest of the field unable to match his pace, the British driver’s time went unbeaten. A red flag two minutes from the end of the session ended proceedings prematurely, and the chequered flag was shown for the final time in GP3 2011 pre-season testing. Müller finished in second spot ahead of Marussia Manor Racing’s Rio Haryanto, Bottas and Christensen.

The GP3 teams will be back on track in three weeks time for Round 1 of the 2011 season in Istanbul, Turkey.

AMERICAN ALEXANDER ROSSI READY FOR OPENING WORLD SERIES by RENUALT WEEKEND IN ALCANIZ , SPAIN

Following three successful pre-season tests, Fortec Motorsport driver, Alexander Rossi is ready for the opening rounds at Motorland Aragon, Alcaniz for the 2011 World Series by Renault Championship.

In March, Rossi and Fortec Motorsport had six productive pre-season collective test days in Barcelona, Paul Ricard and Motorland Aragon. Rossi, a veteran to the circuits but new to championship winning team Fortec Motorsport, used this valuable time to fine tune the set up for his driving style and build internal relations with team. These tests were diverse with mixed weather conditions, enabling Rossi and his team of engineers to prepare, collecting valuable data for a variety of situations for the upcoming season.

World Series by Renault is a successful platform for aspiring formula car drivers making the final step to F1. World Series has been the springboard for Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica and Jaime Alguersuari to name a few of late. Although Rossi is an official rookie this year to World Series by Renault he completed a strong debut in Monaco for his first World Series race in 2010. In addition, Rossi finished fourth overall in 2010 GP3 Championship and for 2011 was recently announced in Malaysia as part of the Air Asia Team Lotus Driver Development Program. Rossi also has duties as an ambassador for the FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy .

“We have had a very strong set of pre-season tests and we’ll be looking to carry this success into the first race this weekend”, Rossi commented. “The team and I were really happy after the Paul Ricard test with the progress we made, developing the car around my driving style.  I was second quickest in the Alcaniz test and while you can’t focus too much on test times, with many variables attributing to an overall time, it’s a good feeling knowing we should be very strong this weekend for opener. The car is really good and I’m comfortable with the team and my surroundings.”

“In addition to pre-season testing, physical training has been top priority to me this winter,” Rossi added. “Between my FIA commitments and Air Asia Team Lotus Driver Development Program duties, my physical conditioning has top priority and has filled my remaining time. I’m well prepared and in the best possible physical shape I can be. I’m confident that my team and I will be challenging for wins from the onset.”

Jamie Dye, Team Manager, Fortec Motorsport commented “We’ve had a successful six day test programme over the course of the past month.  We are happy that we are where we want to be; having made a lot of progress with the car.  The team has full confidence in Alexander that he will be able to deliver for us this weekend and we are now all focused on the first qualifying session of the season,”
