FIA Super License for Formula 3 talents – new F3 Trophy.

On 10th December, the Motor-Sport World Council of the International Automobile Association, FIA, has agreed upon announcing the ’FIA International Formula 3 Trophy’, thus increasing the value of the Formula 3 sport. This additional ranking embraces six already existing FIA approved Formula 3 events. The three best-placed drivers of the new FIA Formula 3 Trophy will be awarded the Super License for Formula 1.

In addition to the ‚Masters of Formula 3’ at Zandvoort and the tradition-rich Macau Formula 3 GP, the Trophy comprises the new Formula 3 race in South Korea and the revived F3 meeting in Pau, Southern France, as well as the Formula 3 races at Spa-Francorchamps and Hockenheim. The season kick-off will be held within the framework of the Formula 3 Euro Series (DTM season kick-off) at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg.

The ’FIA International Formula 3 Trophy’ doesn’t represent an independent series but is supposed to increase the value of the existing Formula 3 series. Condition for the participation in the new ranking is the contesting of a full season in one of the existing Formula 3 championships. The points system of the Trophy is Formula 1 orientated.

Since the creation of the Formula 3 Euro Series, the ’Masters of Formula 3’ has solely been won by Euro-Series drivers and in five of the past eight years, Euro Series contestants also prevailed in Macau. The challenging street circuit of Pau also doesn’t represent virgin soil for the Formula 3 Euro Series: in 2008, the Euro Series contested its last race weekend at Pau to date.
