GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED GOES OUT IN STYLE

There was no day of rest on Sunday for the motorsport fans who flocked to the final day of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, UK. Here is all you need to know:

– Six-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier wasn’t hanging about in his Citroën C3 WRC – the French ace showed an impressive turn of pace on the rally stage. Ogier was joined by team-mate Esapekka Lappi, M-Sport’s Elfyn Evans and a host of legendary rally cars and drivers past and present from Audi Quattros to legendary Fords.

– Aston Martin Red Bull Racing hit the hillclimb in the wet. Patrick Friesacher picked up on Sunday where he left off on Saturday at the wheel of the 2012 world championship-winning Red Bull Racing RB8 on a very wet track and wowed the crowd with some V8 Renault noise and smokey burn-outs.

The event’s final day still had plenty of spectacle in store for the crowds.

– Multiple motorcycle trials champion Dougie Lampkin showed why you shouldn’t lie in on the Sabbath at Goodwood. He performed a series of jaw-dropping tricks early in the day, including repeatedly hopping over one brave volunteer.

– The Action Sports Arena saw displays from MTB Freestyle ace Matt Jones and FMX master Luc Ackermann. It was also the place to be to get up close to WESS stars like Jonny Walker and Manuel Lettenbichler.

– One of the stars of the show in 2019 has undoubtedly been the massive 10-tonne Russian-built Kamaz Dakar truck. Proving the giant offroad racer isn’t just good at ploughing through inhospitable terrain, the 1,000bhp beast showed it’s also pretty nifty at drifting its way around the Goodwood Arena.

– The Kamaz truck also put on a spectacular display of tandem drifting, tearing up the arena alongside a Lexus X AD2.

– Roborace set the first-ever autonomous official timed run at Goodwood Festival of Speed. With a time of 66.96s and a top speed of 104.5mph [168.18kph], the DevBot 2.0 set the first-ever recorded autonomous time at the historic hillclimb.

– Volkswagen’s I.D. R electric prototype ended the 2019 festival as the winner of the hillclimb shootout with a time of 42.32s, but this wasn’t the fastest the all-electric machine went over the weekend. Driven by Romain Dumas, the I.D. R made the run in 41.18s on Friday and then on Saturday went faster still with a 39.9s run – well clear of Nick Heidfeld’s 41.6s record, set back in 1999 at the wheel of a McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car.
