Spielberg (26 September 2022). 75 years and by no means slow: Peter Mücke is the inaugural DTM Classic DRM Cup champion. With his legendary Ford Zakspeed Capri Turbo, Mücke had racked up another race win at Red Bull Ring on Saturday and extended his points’ tally beyond reach. In the exciting Sunday race, Swiss Michael Kammermann scored his first win of the season with his BMW M1 Procar. Ronny Scheer with another M1 and Peter Schumann with the Group 5 635 made it a clean sweep of the top three for BMW. The sixth race of the season at Spielberg concluded the inaugural year of the DTM Classic DRM Cup for race cars from the Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft (DRM) from the 1970s that whetted the appetite among the total of 48 drivers and spectators alike.

“Racing against so strong drivers is very nice,” Peter Mücke underlined the joy he gets from the race series. Meanwhile, he and son Stefan had a little drama at Spielberg as their Group 5 Capri caught fire on Friday. Only a night shift including a 500-kilometre parts run enabled the victory on Saturday. On Sunday, Stefan Mücke took over the cockpit, but retired with a technical issue while in the lead. Runner-up spot behind Peter Mücke went to Hans-Ulrich Kainzinger, who wasn’t fully competitive at Spielberg, having had to swap his Porsche 3.0 RSR for a less powerful 911 ST following an engine failure. Michael Hess and ex-DTM driver Otto Rensing secured third place in the DRM Cup. While Hess scored a podium result by finishing third on Saturday, Rensing had to park the 911 RSR with engine failure on Sunday.

Suitably for the 50th anniversary of BMW M, Kammermann and Scheer made it a 1-2 for the powerful BMW M1 from the defunct Procar series. “I really enjoyed the race, finally in first place,” said a delighted Kammermann, who moved up to fifth in the standings as a result. Scheer, who had retired from second place with a fuel pump failure just before the end of the race on the previous day, caused a heart-stopping moment as he spun in the first corner and rolled backwards while the rest of the field passed him on the left and the right. With a spectacular recovery drive, Scheer worked his way back up again from the back of the field to second place. “I am very happy with that,” the driver from Dresden reported.

Following a misunderstanding, Porsche driver Edgar Salewsky and BMW driver Schumann staged a nice double pirouette. Salewsky repeated his fourth place from the previous day followed by Franz Straub with the rare De Tomaso Pantera, Malte Müller-Wrede with the Porsche 911 and Anton Werner with the Audi quattro. With the iconic BMW 320 Group 5, Austrian Michael Steffny finished in eighth place followed by Wolfgang Kaupp with the Opel Kadett C. Austrian Matthias Rass finished tenth in the race and sixth in the DRM Cup standings with his BMW 2002. In a fortnight, the DTM Classic Cup with former touring cars from 1984 till 2007, particularly from DTM, will have its finale at Hockenheim.
