F3 European Championship

FIA Formula 3 European Championship, round 9, race 3, Vallelunga (I)


The protagonists Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) and Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) have taken the battle for the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title down to the season finale at the 4.547 kilometre Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. Nonetheless, Marciello who travels to Hockenheim with a 45.5-pointlead over Rosenqvist is the favourite in this battle. On the other hand, the Italian Ferrari Driver Academy protégé can’t feel safe as his Swedish opponent is far from giving up early. The prize for the title winner is impressive: In addition to the title and the trophy, the champion also will win a day of testing at the wheel of a Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 racer. 

The two title contenders experienced an eventful season, with Marciello holding the lead right from the start but Rosenqvist following close behind for the major part of the year. The Italian born in Zurich travels to Hockenheim with boosted confidence as he extended his championship lead last weekend by winning two races at his home circuit at Vallelunga, Italy. Rosenqvist, on the other hand, is motivated by the fact that he always has been securing good results at Hockenheim and has got – just as his rival – what it takes to secure race wins at any time. 

In addition to the battle for the title, the fight for third position in the championship also isn’t over yet. Here, the rivals are the team-mates Alex Lynn and Lucas Auer (both Prema Powerteam). Prior to the final three races of the season, Briton Lynn holds a comfortable 58.5-pointlead over Austrian Auer, with the maximum of points to be scored amounting to 75. 

At the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship regulars will be joined by two young guns who also want to compete with the best Formula 3 drivers of the world. Nick Cassidy replaces Russia’s Red Bull junior Daniil Kyvat to race the Dallara #51. In his Formula 3 debut, at Nuremberg’s Norisring, the Kiwi came close to making it to the point’s right way by finishing 11th twice. Meanwhile, Estonian Kevin Korjus will make his FIA Formula 3 European Championship debut, this weekend. He replaces Briton Alexander Sims and races for team ThreeBond with T Sport. 

Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam): “My lead looks comfortable but that’s an error. I learned – at the latest at Zandvoort – that even a big lead doesn’t mean safety. If something goes wrong, such a lead can be lost very quickly. Therefore, I will opt for my usual approach, for the season-finale weekend and won’t allow myself to get distracted by thinking about the possible title triumph. I will fully focus on the job to be done and give my very best. Than we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport): “My gap to Raffaele amounts to 45.5 points, prior to the season finale at Hockenheim, but I’m far from giving up and think that my chances of winning the title are still alive. I know that Hockenheim is a racetrack that used to always suit my team and me well. Therefore, this circuit is the perfect place to once again hurl myself with full power and concentration into the battle with Raffaele.”

FIA Formula 3 European Championship, round 8, race 3, Zandvoort (NL)

FELIX ROSENQVIST WINS—battle for the title is open again—

With his second victory, Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) concluded the eighth race weekend of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship on the Dutch North Sea coast. As points’ leader, Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) retired early, the Swede was able to reduce his gap in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers’ standings to 9.5 points. At the 4.307 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort, Jordan King (Carlin) and Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam) followed behind Rosenqvist.

From pole position, Felix Rosenqvist took the lead at the start, followed by Jordan King, who had already overtaken his team-mate Daniil Kvyat (Carlin) on the first few metres. Alex Lynn moved past the Red Bull junior driver on the opening lap as well, so that Kvyat was in fourth place and came under pressure from Raffaele Marciello. Lynn was only able to relax on lap 16, as Marciello crashed into the barriers all on his own and retired. A safety car intervention followed. At the restart with one lap remaining, Rosenqvist held on to his leading position and soon after celebrated his second victory of the season.

British driver, Jordan King, scored his best result in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship to date by finishing second from his compatriot Alex Lynn. After Marciello’s retirement, Luis Felipe Derani (Fortec Motorsports) moved up to fifth place behind Daniil Kvyat and ahead of Harry Tincknell (Carlin). Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) only overtook Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational) for eighth place on the final lap, followed by Alexander Sims (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and Mitchell Gilbert (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport).

“I knew that I had a good chance of winning when I would be first into the first corner. Therefore, I focussed on the start and I did well. Then, I tried to manage my tyres and to keep my margin on Jordan consistent. That wasn’t very easy and I had to do my utmost. Of course, this weekend in general was great for me: I have scored 75 points and I was able to close up in the drivers’ standings.”

“I was able to overtake Daniil at the start and slotted in behind Felix. Unfortunately, after that, I was never close enough to start an attack. After the restart, I didn’t have a chance against Felix either, even though I was able to reduce the gap. All in all, my weekend was quite good. I have moved up from eighth to sixth in the drivers’ standings.”

“Making it onto the podium from fourth place on the grid is really good, and even more so as I was driving with used tyres in this race. I didn’t have any chance against Felix and Jordan, but I was able to overtake Daniil. With three podium finishes this weekend, I really can’t complain. Now, we have to work on being able to battle for pole position in qualifying again.”


FIA Formula 3 European Championship, round 4, Brands Hatch (GB)

FIA Formula 3 European Championship to kick off the second half of its season-

After a six-week summer break, the young FIA Formula 3 European championship drivers will be back in action, this weekend: at Nuremberg’s Norisring, they will kick off the second half of their 2013 season. Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) will travel to the 2.3-kilometre street circuit as championship leader. But the Italian who is supported by the Ferrari Driver Academy has got Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) right on his back. The Swede won all the three races at the Red Bull Ring, thus reducing Marciello’s lead on him to 27.5 points.

While the hunter, Felix Rosenqvist, boosted his self-confidence with four wins in the latest four races, the hunted, Raffaele Marciello, has fond memories of the Norisring. Last year, he won the third race of the Formula 3 Euro Series meeting, there, and defeated – inter alia, coming champion Daniel Juncadella who had to settle for finishing second. Behind title contenders Marciello and Rosenqvist, Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) is waiting for a mistake of the two championship leaders. With 165 points on his tally, the Austrian currently holds third position in the championship and just can’t wait for contesting his debut race at the Norisring. 

In the season highlight of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season, in Nuremberg, the German colours will be represented by Sven Müller (ma-con), Lucas Wolf (URD Rennsport) and André Rudersdorf (ma-con). Wolf celebrated his biggest success in the season to date at the Red Bull Ring by finishing third while Müller still is waiting for his first podium. With three fourth places – at Hockenheim and Brands Hatch – he several times came close to realising this goal – but never quite made it, in the end. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Rudersdorf, the youngest of the three German drivers, displayed a steep learning curve in the 2013 season of the planet’s most competitive young-gun series and already succeeded in scoring a point. 

At the Norisring, the European Championship regulars will be joined by three guest drivers: the already known Daniil Kvyat (Carlin) and Alexander Sims (ThreeBond with T Sport) as well as Nick Cassidy (Eurointernational). Briton Sims will race the T-Sport car that abandoned by William Buller (Fortec Motorports) when he switched to Fortec Motorsports. Sims already made a guest appearance for ThreeBond with T Sport in 2012 and won one of the Formula 3 races at the Nürburgring right away. Meanwhile, Kiwi Nick Cassidy comes to Europe as two-time champion in New Zealand’s Toyota Racing Series. He plans to contest the rest of the season as team-mate of Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational). Other than for Sims who already finished second at the Norisring in 2009, the street circuit in the heart of Nuremberg represents virgin soil for Cassidy. 

Sven Müller (ma-con): “You may think that the Norisring is an easy circuit but far from it: there are tough brake point’s und a lot of bumps and driving the car at the very limit is extremely difficult. In addition, the track at extremely short and this means that the field will be extremely close together, this weekend. I expect the spectators to witness three thrilling Formula 3 races with a lot of action. My performances in the past weeks were okay although I have to admit that I expected to do slightly better, this year. I hope to finally make it to the podium, at the Norisring.


RTL GP Masters of Formula 3, Zandvoort (NL)

Second Masters victory for Felix Rosenqvist-

Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) appears to be unbeatable at the moment: having won all three races at the Red Bull Ring at the beginning of June, he secured his second victory in the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 this weekend. Two years ago, the Swede had already been the popular winner of Europe’s most prestigious Formula 3 race. At the 4.307 kilometres long circuit in Zandvoort, embedded in the North Sea dunes, he won the 23rd running of the Masters of Formula 3 from Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam). Emil Bernstorff (Prema Powerteam) claimed third place. 

Having started from pole position, Rosenqvist won the dash towards the first corner and drove a safe and undisputed lights-to-flag victory home. Only on lap 16, the Swede had a hairy moment when he suddenly lost 1.6 seconds to his closest rival Alex Lynn. The reason was a medical car that was on the track. After that, Rosenqvist completed his laps in a seasoned manner and gradually extended his lead until taking the chequered flag as the winner at the end of lap 25. 

The battle for second and third place, occupied by the two Prema Powerteam drivers Alex Lynn and Emil Bernstorff, was also decided in the opening stage already. There was more action in the midfield: Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) attacked Sven Müller (ma-con) in the battle for fifth on lap five. Both drivers tangled and retired. Formula 3 rookie Jordan King (Carlin) secured fifth place from Eddie Cheever (Prema Powerteam), Nicholas Latifi (Carlin), Luis Felipe Derani (Fortec Motorsports), William Buller (Fortec Motorsports) and Antonio Giovinazzi (Double R Racing). Local hero Dennis van de Laar (Van Amersfoort Racing), who is living in Zandvoort, only just missed out on a top ten finish as he came home eleventh.

“Pole position, victory and the fastest race lap: it was a perfect weekend for me. Prior to the event, I didn’t very much focus on this race, because this year, I am clearly concentrating on the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. I regarded the Masters as an additional race and just wanted to have a good time. Nevertheless, the goal was, of course, to win here and even more so after things went so well in the free practice sessions and in the two qualifying heats. I had the only hairy moment of the race when all of a sudden, a medical car was in front of me at the track. Apart from that, I was in control throughout.”

“Today, Felix was the quicker driver and he has won while I can be happy with second place, too. My start was food and I was able to gain one place, but I didn’t have any possibilities to keep up with Felix’s speed in the race. As I had a little bit of oversteer, my tyres degraded towards the end of the race, allowing Emil Bernstorff to close up to me more and more.”

“At the start, I tried to overtake Felix, but I probably was a little bit too aggressive and therefore I had too much wheelspin. I was racing at Zandvoort for the first time and I reckon that fourth place isn’t a bad result. It is only slightly disappointing as I started the race from second place on the grid. However, it was good practice for the FIA Formula 3 European Championship round here at Zandvoort at the end of September.”


RTL GP Masters of Formula 3, Zandvoort (NL)

Felix Rosenqvist claims pole position at Zandvoort…

Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 1:30.839 minutes) was unbeatable in qualifying for this weekend’s RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 at the 4.307 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort and claimed pole position in a dominant way. The Swede, who already won Europe’s most prestigious Formula 3 race and is currently placed second in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, was followed by British driver Harry Tincknell (Carlin, 1:31.131 minutes). The Carlin driver is taking place in the tradition-steeped Masters of Formula 3 event for the first time in his career. British drivers Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.154 minutes) and Emil Bernstorff (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.255 minutes) are lining up on the second row of the starting grid for tomorrow’s race.

Starting grid positions for the Masters of Formula 3 were determined in two qualifying sessions of 20 minutes each, the outright fastest lap time of each driver being considered for the classification. In the faster first session, Felix Rosenqvist came out on top. The Mücke driver, who had already been fastest in first free practice, moved up to the top of the time sheets in the second half of the session. In second qualifying, Rosenqvist was fastest, too, but his lap time was slower than in the first heat.

A trio of British drivers followed behind the Mücke driver: Harry Tincknell, Alex Lynn and Emil Bernstorff. Austrian Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.256 minutes) was classified fifth to ensure that three of the four Prema drivers ended up in the top five. The Italian team won the Masters last year when Daniel Juncadella crossed the finish line in first place.

Sven Müller (ma-con, 1:31.363 minutes) and Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational, 1:31.399 minutes) followed in sixth and seventh place respectively while a trio of Carlin drivers with Nicholas Latifi (Carlin, 1:31.404 minutes), Jordan King (Carlin, 1:31.414 minutes) and Jann Mardenborough (Carlin, 1:31.572 minutes) rounded out the top ten. 

Dennis van de Laar (Van Amersfoort Racing, 1:31.782 minutes) was one of the few young drivers to improve his personal best lap time in the slower second qualifying. The Dutchman, who is living in Zandvoort, will start his home race from twelfth place on the grid behind Eddie Cheever (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.716 minutes). 

The Masters of Formula 3 will start tomorrow, Sunday, at 13.30 hrs local time. Television partner n-tv will be showing the race in Germany tape-delayed from 17.05 hrs.

“From my point of view, qualifying wasn’t too bad. The important thing is that this year, my car is better than last year. Pole position is a perfect start into the weekend, but the only thing that really matters is tomorrow’s race. Therefore, I don’t want to get too excited about this pole position.”

FIA FORMULA 3 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP Half-time review part 1: Mücke and Prema battling for the title…

It’s season half-time in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, with teams and drivers looking forward to their well-deserved summer-break. The perfect point in time for an interim review. With Raffaele Marciello and Felix Rosenqvist, Prema Powerteam and kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport have got the hottest title contenders racing for them. Both drivers have got a lot of Formula 3 experience under their belts and 14 of the 15 races contested to date were won by one of these two teams. In the team championship, the Italian squad and the team around Team Principal Peter Mücke hold first and second positions. 

Raffaele Marciello made a virtually perfect start into the season by winning the first race of the season in his home event at Monza. And the Ferrari Driver Academy protégé also won the third round of the Italian race weekend held at the tradition-rich Formula 1 circuit to consequently travel to Silverstone for the second race meeting of the season as championship leader. In the following events – at Silverstone and Hockenheim – the 18-year-old extended his lead with three consecutive wins but in the second British event, his streak of success came to a temporary end. After round three of the Brands Hatch meeting his points were disallowed due to technical irregularities and two weeks later, at the Red Bull Ring, he had to cope with his first winless race weekend of the season. 

Other than Marciello, Felix Rosenqvist needed his time to get going. At Monza, the 21-year-old scored just 12 points to only afterwards establish as regular race-win contender. He secured a race win both at Silverstone and Hockenheim and at the Red Bull Ring, he became the first driver in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship history to have celebrated a treble. With these successes, Rosenqvist significantly closed in on championship leader Marcello and lies just 27.5 points behind the Italian, now. 

Austrian Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) and Briton Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam) currently hold third and fourth positions in the championship. Other then their team-mate Marciello, they both are new Prema Powerteam signings but nonetheless, they succeeded in demonstrating their skills several times – and both already secured a race win. The only Prema driver still waiting for his first major success is Eddie Cheever. The best results so far of the 20-year-old son of former Formula 1 ace and Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever were two eighth places. At season half time, he holds 16th position in the drivers’ championship. 

kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport originally planned to contest the season with Pascal Wehrlein (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) but then, the 18-year-old 2012 Formula 3 Euro Series Vice-Champion was offered the opportunity to switch to DTM and did so after the successful Monza weekend. He was replaced by Michael Lewis (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport). But after having entered the season belatedly, the US-American has got his problems to get going. The 22 year-old hopeful from California currently is 19th in the championship, right behind his team-mate Roy Nissany in 18th position. The 18 year-old advanced from the ADAC Formula Masters to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. A major step but he coped well with the new challenge, impressed with a solid leaning curve and at Brands Hatch, he succeeded in scoring his first points. Meanwhile, team-mate Mitchell Gilbert still is waiting for his first successes. Nonetheless, the 19-year-old Australian who was born in Malaysia is confident regarding the second half of the season and hopes to soon also have got some points on his tally. 

The second chapter of the comprehensive half-time review focuses on the achievements of the teams Carlin, Fortec Motorsports and Eurointernational in the first half of the season.
