RTL GP Masters of Formula 3, Zandvoort (NL)

Felix Rosenqvist claims pole position at Zandvoort…

Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 1:30.839 minutes) was unbeatable in qualifying for this weekend’s RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 at the 4.307 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort and claimed pole position in a dominant way. The Swede, who already won Europe’s most prestigious Formula 3 race and is currently placed second in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, was followed by British driver Harry Tincknell (Carlin, 1:31.131 minutes). The Carlin driver is taking place in the tradition-steeped Masters of Formula 3 event for the first time in his career. British drivers Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.154 minutes) and Emil Bernstorff (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.255 minutes) are lining up on the second row of the starting grid for tomorrow’s race.

Starting grid positions for the Masters of Formula 3 were determined in two qualifying sessions of 20 minutes each, the outright fastest lap time of each driver being considered for the classification. In the faster first session, Felix Rosenqvist came out on top. The Mücke driver, who had already been fastest in first free practice, moved up to the top of the time sheets in the second half of the session. In second qualifying, Rosenqvist was fastest, too, but his lap time was slower than in the first heat.

A trio of British drivers followed behind the Mücke driver: Harry Tincknell, Alex Lynn and Emil Bernstorff. Austrian Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.256 minutes) was classified fifth to ensure that three of the four Prema drivers ended up in the top five. The Italian team won the Masters last year when Daniel Juncadella crossed the finish line in first place.

Sven Müller (ma-con, 1:31.363 minutes) and Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational, 1:31.399 minutes) followed in sixth and seventh place respectively while a trio of Carlin drivers with Nicholas Latifi (Carlin, 1:31.404 minutes), Jordan King (Carlin, 1:31.414 minutes) and Jann Mardenborough (Carlin, 1:31.572 minutes) rounded out the top ten. 

Dennis van de Laar (Van Amersfoort Racing, 1:31.782 minutes) was one of the few young drivers to improve his personal best lap time in the slower second qualifying. The Dutchman, who is living in Zandvoort, will start his home race from twelfth place on the grid behind Eddie Cheever (Prema Powerteam, 1:31.716 minutes). 

The Masters of Formula 3 will start tomorrow, Sunday, at 13.30 hrs local time. Television partner n-tv will be showing the race in Germany tape-delayed from 17.05 hrs.

“From my point of view, qualifying wasn’t too bad. The important thing is that this year, my car is better than last year. Pole position is a perfect start into the weekend, but the only thing that really matters is tomorrow’s race. Therefore, I don’t want to get too excited about this pole position.”

FIA Formula 3 European Championship, round 4, Brands Hatch (GB)

Three pole positions for local hero Alex Lynn…

At Brands Hatch, with 1.929 kilometres the shortest track on the calendar of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam) was unbeatable in both qualifyings. The 19-year-old Brit, who is only living 30 minutes down the road from Brands Hatch, claimed all three pole positions. His team-mate Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam), the current points’ leader in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, will be starting next to him from the front row of the grid into all the three races.

Due to the large field, there were two qualifying groups, with two qualifying sessions for each group. The outright fastest driver of the two groups is starting from pole position, with the drivers of his group lining up behind him according to the relevant qualifying result. The drivers of the other group are starting on the other side of the starting grid behind their fastest driver.

In the group of the odd starting numbers, a duel for the top position emerged halfway through the 20 minutes’ session, involving Sven Müller (ma-con, 0:41.395 minutes) and Harry Tincknell (Carlin, 0:41.425 minutes). The two youngsters inspired each other to ever-faster lap times and at that time were significantly faster than the other drivers. Soon after that, Raffaele Marciello (0:41.310 minutes) started his attacks on the front-runners and moved up into the lead with six minutes remaining. Müller remained second from Tincknell, Michael Lewis (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 0:41.704 minutes), Jann Mardenborough (Carlin, 0:41.731 minutes) and Eddie Cheever (Prema Powerteam, 0:41.756 minutes). 

In the group of the even starting numbers, Alex Lynn (0:41.098 minutes) came out on top, having moved up into first place eight minutes before the end following a duel with Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational, 0:41.267 minutes) and having defended this position until the end. He was followed by Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam, 0:41.147 minutes), Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 0:41.182 minutes) and the three Brits Tom Blomqvist, Josh Hill (Fortec Motorsports, 0:41.367 minutes) and Jordan King (Carlin, 0:41.458 minutes). Thus, four Brits managed to qualify in the top six of this group for their home round.

Lynn will be starting the first race from pole position, because his lap time was faster than Marciello’s.

In the ranking of the second-fastest laps, Marciello (0:41.367 minutes) also claimed the top position in his group. The following positions were taken by Sven Müller (0:41.477 minutes), Harry Tincknell (0:41.486 minutes), Michael Lewis (0:41.725 minutes), Jann Mardenborough (0:41.777 minutes) and Eddie Cheever (0:41.799 minutes). Alex Lynn dominated group B. With a fastest time of 0:41.189 minutes, the Brit secured himself first place, followed by Lucas Auer (0:41.224 minutes), Felix Rosenqvist (0:41.247 minutes), Tom Blomqvist (0:41.282 minutes) and rookie driver Josh Hill (0:41.374 minutes), plus William Buller (ThreeBond with T-Sport, 0:41.505 minutes).

In second qualifying, Marciello (0:40.846 minutes) also was the benchmark in his group and claimed first place with a margin of 0.206 seconds. Harry Tincknell (0:41.052 minutes) had to make do with second place in his second home race of this year, followed by a strong Måns Grenhagen (Van Amersfoort Racing, 0:41.245 minutes) and Sven Müller (0:41.247 minutes), who confirmed his performance from first qualifying. At the start of the session, Müller was on top, but then dropped back to fourth. Jann Mardenborough (0:41.285 minutes) and Antonio Giovinazzi (Double R Racing, 0:41.322 minutes) were fifth and sixth in group A. After an accident by Michael Lewis with 1:40 minutes remaining, the session was red-flagged and did not resume. The American was taken to the medical centre for a routine check. 

After a break, the second group – all drivers with even starting numbers – took up their second qualifying. Alex Lynn (0:41.845 minutes) moved up at the start of the second half and was able to gradually improve his lap time. Eventually, he ended up with a fastest lap time of 0:41.845 minutes, one thousandth of a second faster than Marciello had been in group A. Thus, Lynn secured himself his third pole position of the weekend. Lucas Auer (0:40.970 minutes) secured second place in this group from Felix Rosenqvist (0:40.982 minutes), Jordan King (0:41.206 minutes), Josh Hill (0:41.257 minutes) and Tom Blomqvist (0:41.260 minutes).

Harry Tincknell and Carlin win on home soil…

At the 5.891 kilometres long Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, Harry Tincknell (Carlin) scored his maiden win in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and also secured the first win for Volkswagen in this year’s series. In a close battle, the Brit beat his compatriot Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam). Swede Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) finished third. In the drivers’ standings, Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) remains in the lead in spite of his sixth-place finish in the first race at Silverstone. He now has a margin of 14.5 points over his closest rival Harry Tincknell.

Harry Tincknell already laid the foundation for his maiden victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the start, when he converted his pole position into the race lead. During the race, he was not able to pull a gap over his rival Alex Lynn. However, the 21-year-old race leader made no mistakes and did not give Lynn a chance for a successful attack. Behind Tincknell and Lynn, Felix Rosenqvist initially was involved in a battle for third with Nicholas Latifi (Carlin), but then clearly had the upper hand.

For the better part of the race, William Buller (ThreeBond with T-Sport) battled with Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) and Raffaele Marciello for fifth place. In a thrilling encounter with various position changes, Auer eventually came out on top. In the closing stages, the Austrian managed to close the gap to Latifi and overtake the Canadian. He took the chequered flag in fourth place. His team-mate Marciello finished sixth behind Latifi, Buller had to make do with seventh. Félix Serrallés (Fortec Motorsports), Luis Felipe Derani (Fortec Motorsports) and Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational) ended up eighth to tenth. In total, four British drivers made it into the top ten in the first FIA Formula 3 European Championship race on British soil.

“I am really happy with this victory here at Silverstone. We already had a good performance in the season opener at Monza, but things are even going better in our home round. The race wasn’t easy, because Alex kept me under pressure behind me. But my car was great and I didn’t make any mistakes. That was particularly important in the opening laps, because the track was still damp and slippery at that time.”

“In fact, I am slightly disappointed, because I could have done better. Unfortunately, my starting grid position was at the more damp part of the grid, therefore Felix was able to overtake me. Later on, Harry didn’t make any mistakes and thus didn’t give me an opportunity to overtake him. Of course, being British, Harry and I have already done many races here at Silverstone and therefore, perhaps we have a slight advantage.”

“At the start, I was able to overtake Alex, but then I made a slight mistake and he overtook me again. However, I also have to admit that Harry and Alex were quicker and I wasn’t able to keep up with them. Now, we have to try and make the car a little bit quicker for the next two races.”

HARVEY CLAIMS FINAL-RACE VICTORY AND IS BRITISH F3 CHAMPION

Jack Harvey is the 2012 Champion of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series – the first British victor for six years. The Lincolnshire 19-year-old clinched the crown this evening at Donington Park with a near-faultless win in the final round having led all the way from pole position.

Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver Harvey is the Carlin team’s fifth successive champion and also ended his season with the most race victories of all: seven.

“This means the world to me,” said Jack on the victory podium. “The way Silverstone went for me a couple of weeks ago was really bad, so I came away from there feeling a bit deflated. To finish on top here is just magic.

“Carlin have been incredible. Everybody just presumes that we have good drivers but it’s the team that’s the best – they have the best people at this level and the next few above. The team worked so hard for me and this is for them.”

Team boss Trevor Carlin paid fulsome tribute to his charge: “Jack did a great job – everything he had to do. There was a lot of pressure on him and I’m very proud of him.”

Harvey took command of the race at the outset and, despite intense pressure throughout from Fortec driver Alex Lynn, held on to win by 0.682s. His only scare came on lap 11 when he erred slightly at the chicane and Lynn seized a chance to outbrake the leader into the Melbourne hairpin. However the attempt, wreathed in tyre smoke, ended in failure.

“I was quite a bit quicker than Jack the whole race,” said Alex. “He made a mistake at the chicane so I tried to capitalise on it. It didn’t really work out. I think that was Jack’s only mistake and he thoroughly deserved to win.”

Another title contender, Carlin’s Jazeman Jaafar, shadowed Harvey and Lynn to the end but could not match their pace. The Malaysian, who finishes championship runner-up, praised Harvey for his victory: “I’m not really disappointed; Jack was that little bit quicker than me all weekend – he did a sterling job.”

The other title hopeful, Fortec’s Felix Serralles, placed eighth after a disappointing race. The Puerto Rican held fifth for much of the race but faded in the closing eight laps. He takes third in the championship – an impressive feat for a rookie.

Harry Tincknell claimed fourth – and fifth in the championship to boot – after nipping past his team-mate Pietro Fantin at the Old Hairpin three laps from the end.

Hywel Lloyd claimed National class victory for CF Racing to complete a hat-trick of Donington class wins.

Earlier in the day, the championship’s penultimate round brought victory for Harry Tincknell, and disaster for Jaafar and Lynn, who clashed at the Old Hairpin on the opening lap.

The race belonged to Tincknell from the outset, the Devon driver romping from pole position to chequered flag to win by 1.7s and record his fourth such victory of the year. The Carlin man made a perfect start and was unfazed by a three-lap safety car period which ensued from the Jaafar/Lynn accident.

It was a great bounce-back for Harry from feeling under the weather for several days. “I haven’t been feeling 100 per cent this last week and we had a tough time in testing but I’ve been steadily working as hard as I can to get on the pace,” he said. “I made a really good start, which has been a strong point for me this year, and after that it was all totally straightforward. It’s great to get another win.” Harry additionally collected the coveted Raymond Mays Trophy, awarded by the Donington Park Racing Association Club, for his efforts.

Fortec’s Pipo Derani, who started second on the grid, shadowed Tincknell throughout and was pleased with his fifth podium of the year: “This is good for me. I’ve had a lot of races this year which I could have finished well but didn’t, and it’s been disappointing. Apart from that it has been a good year – lots of learning and some good results as well. Now it’s all about preparation to see if I can get back next year and try to do better.”

Third place went the way of Brazil’s Pietro Fantin, who snatched it away from Serralles on lap eight at Coppice. “He made a mistake, had oversteer,” said Carlin man Fantin. “I almost didn’t make it – I had two wheels on the grass there on the inside – but I knew that Felix was fighting for the championship so I didn’t think that he would come back at me.”

Serralles did not fight back: he had a job on his hands preserving fourth place from the attentions of his Fortec team-mate Hannes van Asseldonk. The Puerto Rican kept him at bay for the duration.

The first-lap clash between Jaafar and Lynn started with a brave move from Jaafar through the Craner Curves, Jazeman pulling alongside Alex to run side-by-side with the Fortec man as they approached the Old Hairpin. Lynn then locked up and slithered wide and into Jaafar; a deflating rear tyre on Lynn’s car was blamed for the incident.

Fantin & Tincknell take the wins; Harvey the series lead

Pietro Fantin and Harry Tincknell set the pace among the British Formula 3 field at the Norisring in Germany today, Fantin taking the British championship honours in the first of the day’s races after setting a blistering qualifying pace, and Tincknell winning outright the reverse-grid race, leading from pole position to chequered flag.

Jack Harvey meanwhile scored well in both races to overhaul Jazeman Jaafar for the championship lead, while in the National class there were twin wins for T-Sport’s Spike Goddard.

Qualifying
Fantin led the way among the British F3 runners in the delayed qualifying session, posting fifth-quickest time overall, two-tenths off the pace of pole man Pascal Wehrlein.

Qualifying had been due to take place on Friday afternoon, but high temperatures in Nuremberg led to the track breaking up at two corners, and the decision was made to postpone the session to this morning; repairs were effected overnight.

Fantin’s best lap of 49.328s was 0.166s better than that of his closest British F3 rival, Fortec Motorsport man Felix Serralles, to earn Pietro fifth on the grid for tomorrow’s 40-minute finale. Fantin’s second-quickest time was good also at 49.376s, earning him fifth position also in this morning’s 40-minute encounter.

“I like it here and my car is really good,” said Fantin. “It’s completely different to anything we have driven before: low downforce and heavy braking, so it’s really tricky. Here, the time is made under braking, so you need to risk it, and be on the limit all the time. The track is similar to some at home in Brazil because it is really bumpy, and maybe that suits me.”

Serralles’ Fortec team-mates Pipo Derani and Hannes van Asseldonk enjoyed strong showings also in qualifying, third and fourth among the British championship runners respectively, with Carlos Sainz and Jazeman Jaafar next up for Carlin.

Harry Tincknell, the British pacesetter in yesterday’s free practice, was baffled to be only eighth among his rivals today. “I don’t know what the problem is, but it’s a different car today,” said the Devonian. Brands Hatch double winner Jack Harvey will line up immediately behind Tincknell tomorrow; he complained of balance problems.

Round 15
Fantin scored his first British Formula 3 win of the season in the first 40-minute race, the 20-year-old Brazilian bringing his Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen home in third place overall, surviving unscathed an incident-packed race which saw dramas for several leading championship contenders.

Fantin finished behind two of the Euro F3 series drivers in the combined British and European series event; the race was won overall by Carlin’s Will Buller following the exclusion of Prema Powerteam driver Daniel Juncadella after a series of controversial late-race clashes.

With a 28-car field on a tight, bumpy and twisty street track, incidents came thick and fast. The turn one hairpin produced an opening-lap clash between British F3 title protagonists Jack Harvey and Jazeman Jaafar, Racing Steps Foundation driver Harvey colliding with the rear end of his Carlin team-mate’s car, sending Jaafar spinning into the path of the field which resulted in front-end damage for the Malaysian and necessitated a pit call.

“I tried to go up the inside of Jaz, and he covered a bit,” said Jack, “and at that point I just couldn’t stop it. I was on the ‘marbles’ and in dirty air, and couldn’t stop.” Race officials penalised Harvey, then running eighth overall, with a drive-through penalty.

Fortec’s Alex Lynn was caught up in the first-corner melee also. “It’s just so tight here,” said the Essex man. “I just got squeezed out and into the inside wall. I was lucky to be able to keep going.” Lynn was forced to the pits for a new nosecone.

Later on the opening lap it was the turn of Carlos Sainz to strike trouble, or more specifically the wall; the Spanish Carlin driver retired to the pits with suspension damage.

Despite an average start, Fantin was away and running in sixth overall, with a Euro car between himself and his closest championship rival, Pipo Derani, with Felix Serralles next up from Harry Tincknell.

Fortec man Derani ended his race on lap seven, when he was tapped into a spin by Prema Powerteam’s Michael Lewis. Derani’s team-mate Hannes van Asseldonk got caught up in the fracas. “I got hit from behind and my wing broke,” said the Dutchman, “I lost a lot of places and then I got a flag to come into the pits and the team pulled my wing off.”

Double R’s Fahmi Ilyas joined Sainz and Derani in retirement on lap seven when the Malaysian damaged his suspension on one of the Norisring’s unforgiving retaining walls.

With Juncadella and Mucke Motorsport’s Pascal Wehrlein disputing top spot, Fantin held a secure sixth with a lead of around 5s over Serralles, and Harry Tincknell – minus his rear wing in a radical attempt to boost his straightline speed – up to third.

Fantin was bottled up behind ma-con Euro runner Emil Bernstorff but dared not risk his British series lead by attempting to pass. “My start was not really good,” said Pietro after the race. “I lost one position there, but my position compared with the British cars was really good. I needed this win, so I didn’t risk anything by trying to pass the Euro Series guy. I did try to have a go one time but I ran wide and Felix caught up a little with me. I had good pace today, the car was really good and I am really happy.”

Fantin crossed the line 1.3s ahead of Serralles, with Tincknell a further 8.8s behind in third. “I started with no rear wing,” said Harry. “It was a tactical decision to try to help me pass people – it didn’t really pay off until later in the race when I got used to it.”

Australians Geoff Uhrhane and Nick McBride were next up for Double R and T-Sport respectively. “It was chaos out there,” said McBride. “I got hit and lost quite a few spots as a result. We are still paying the price for our qualifying performance when we had too much understeer.”

Harvey returned to the fray after his drive-through penalty to finish sixth among the Brits and the last unlapped runner. Spike Goddard was seventh for T-Sport to win the National class – his eighth class win of the year – ahead of pit-callers Jaafar, Lynn and van Asseldonk, with Duvashen Padayachee completing the finishers in his Double R National class car.

Juncadella crossed the line first overall but was later excluded from the results for his part in closing-laps collisions with his team-mate Raffaele Marciello, as well as Wehrlein.

Round 16
Harry Tincknell led the 20-minute Norisring reverse-grid race from start to finish this evening to rack up his second British Formula 3 win of the season. After struggling in qualifying and finishing the first race eighth overall, the Devonian started from the pole and took full advantage of it.

Tincknell was shadowed from the beginning by Fortec’s Felix Serralles, the Puerto Rican making a superb start from fourth on the grid to slot into second on the opening lap, ahead of Euro F3 runners Felix Rosenqvist and Pascal Wehrlein.

Serralles chased Tincknell as hard as he dared, never allowing the leader’s advantage to extend beyond one second, but had in the end to settle for the second step of the podium.

As with the day’s earlier race there were incidents galore, including wall-bashing early on from Double R’s Fahmi Ilyas and T-Sport’s Nick McBride. Ilyas retired to the pits but McBride was able to continue after a pit call. A brief Safety Car period did little to disturb Tincknell’s composure.

“I knew that I had to get off the line and get into the first corner first,” said Harry, “because that would make my life quite a bit easier. Then the safety car came out and I had to make sure I had a good restart. From there it was a question of controlling the race.

“We went quite radical in race one with no rear wing; we went back on that for this race. The team have done a great job for me; to qualify 15th and to have had a third and a win – in F3 on a street track – makes it a really special day and I am really happy for all the guys. I got my confidence back at Rockingham with my win and things are just getting better and better.”

Serralles was pleased with his performance also: “I started fourth and got another great start, picking up two places. It’s a great result. Fortec did a fantastic job and I’m happy with all the points I have scored today. I couldn’t catch Harry – he was quicker in some places and me in others – but that’s the way racing is.”

Jack Harvey made major gains from the chaos of the opening lap, leaping from 13th overall on the grid to eighth, and third in terms of the British championship runners. Racing Steps Foundation driver Harvey picked up a further place when Euro man Sven Muller retired on the seventh lap and held on for the duration of the race to claim the final step of the British podium.

With that prize for Harvey went the championship lead: erstwhile points-topper Jazeman Jaafar endured a torrid time, brushing the wall and suffering contact with another car. The Malaysian finished 14th overall, and seventh in the British class.

Fourth of the British series contenders was race one victor Pietro Fantin, who would have been closer to the sharp end but for losing a lot of ground on the opening lap, with Fortec’s Alex Lynn fifth, ahead of his team-mate Hannes van Asseldonk. Double R’s Geoff Uhrhane took eighth behind Jaafar, with Pipo Derani ninth from the back of the grid after his race one retirement. McBride recovered from his early damage to 10th in class, a lap in arrears.

In the National class, Spike Goddard ran home the winner for the second time today for the T-Sport team, beating his Double R rival Duvashen Padayachee to the line by 10.4s.

Carlos Sainz suffered his third no-score in as many races, the Carlin man retiring after 18 laps with gearbox problems.

Tincknell & Harvey make it three in a row for Carlin

Wins for Harry Tincknell and Jack Harvey today at Rockingham set the seal on an excellent weekend for the Carlin team in the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series. Tincknell took the honours in the morning’s reverse-grid race to score his maiden win of the season, while Harvey dominated the afternoon feature race to claim his second victory of 2012 and re-establish his championship hopes.

Carlin’s Saturday winner, Jazeman Jaafar, leads the championship table by a 13-point margin from Harvey as the series swings toward Kent and the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in a fortnight’s time.

Harry Tincknell scored his first win of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 season at Rockingham this morning, the Carlin man driving a faultless race from second on the grid to lead home two of his team-mates, Pietro Fantin and Jack Harvey, and become the sixth different winner of the season.

Tincknell won the race away from the startline, blasting past pole man Nick McBride (T-Sport) to secure the lead around the turn one banking and into the Deene hairpin, with Fantin following him through past McBride to take up second spot.

Fantin was an ever-present threat to Tincknell but there were no mistakes from the Devonian, who crossed the line six-tenths ahead for the win. “I knew it was all going to be about the start,” said Harry. “We’ve worked really hard to improve my starts, and I’m really glad that that hard work has paid off. I knew I just had to get away well and get in front to the first corner, and that’s exactly what happened. It worked perfectly. After that it was just a question of managing the tyres and managing the gap.”

McBride held on in third for four laps until Harvey squeezed through at Deene to secure the final place on the podium. The T-Sport man slipped further down the order thereafter, losing eighth on the final lap to Fortec’s Pipo Derani.

Felix Serralles got the better of an entertaining duel with his Fortec team-mate Hannes van Asseldonk, passing the Dutchman on lap five to move into fourth spot, which he held to the end ahead of van Asseldonk, Saturday victor Jazeman Jaafar, Alex Lynn, Derani and McBride.

Carlos Sainz might have been on for eighth but slipped to the back after a clash with Fahmi Ilyas caused him to spin on lap five. The Spaniard continued to 12th, behind Ilyas and Geoff Uhrhane.

T-Sport’s Spike Goddard suffered a rare defeat in the National class, Double R’s Duvashen Padayachee taking over the class lead at mid-distance and going on to record a 20-second victory. “It was a bit better for me this time around,” said Padayachee. “We weren’t quick in qualifying but we made a good step forward with the set up for the races.”

Round 11
Jack Harvey more than set to rights his Rockingham weekend this afternoon, putting in a virtuoso performance in the 11th round to win by a 22-second margin. Yesterday Jack burnt his clutch on the line and threw away his pole position advantage; today there were no errors from the Lincolnshire driver.

As is always the case at Rockingham, the start was crucial and Harvey nailed it, followed away from P2 by Fortec’s Alex Lynn and Carlos Sainz, who jumped Jaafar off the line. The only blip for Harvey came towards the end of that lap when the Safety Car made a brief appearance following a collision between some midfielders. It was on track for a lap only and Harvey handled the restart perfectly and sped into the distance.

By lap 10 jumping Jack was seven seconds clear of Lynn, and by lap 20 the gap was 14 seconds. Harvey did not slacken the pace, however, and by the end was still circulating close to his lap record-breaking pace of the seventh lap.

“That definitely made up for yesterday,” said Harvey. “I made a good start, dealt with the safety car, and the winning margin was not too shabby.” His team boss Trevor Carlin was fulsome in his praise: “That race was phenomenal – a really proper Formula 3 performance, how a driver should do it. Jack showed everyone up today.”

Alex Lynn was pleased enough with another second: “Jack was very quick today. He had a bad run yesterday so he was out to make up for it. Second is good, and I’m happy with the points.”

Sainz’s third place was some compensation for a difficult weekend for the Spanish former championship leader. “It makes up for things a little,” he said. “I got a good start and tried to push as hard as I could with the tyres that I had.”

Jaafar, Hannes van Asseldonk and Felix Serralles ran in line astern throughout for fourth, fifth and sixth places, with Pipo Derani pinching seventh from Fahmi Ilyas early on. Pietro Fantin and Nick McBride completed the top 10.

The first-lap fracas at Yentwood corner which brought out the safety car accounted for two cars, those of Tincknell and Spike Goddard, both of whom retired to the pits. Geoff Uhrhane suffered damage also but continued after attention in the pits from the Double R technicians.

With Goddard out of the running, Double R’s Duvashen Padayachee enjoyed a trouble-free run to his fourth National Class win of the season, narrowing the points gap between himself and Spike to just 16 points in the process.
