A 1-2 for BMW with Farfus and Werner in the season opener…

Hockenheim. First, Tim Bendzko performed the official DTM song ’Ich steh nicht mehr still’ (’I am not standing still anymore’), and then, the action started at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg: the first DTM race of the season provided thrilling motorsport action with numerous overtaking manoeuvres, position changes and surprises. The 22 strong field thrilled the spectators on the grandstands. The buoyant winner after 42 laps and 192.108 kilometres was Brazilian Augusto Farfus with his BMW M3 DTM. The 29-year old showed a clever race, successfully used the technical novelties option tyres and DRS and was the first to take the chequered flag from his fellow BMW driver Dirk Werner and Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz). 

“That was great fun today. The option tyres and DRS have provided a lot of action. I had a good start and I was very fast. What a start into the season,” said Farfus, who was on the top step of the winners’ podium for the second time in the DTM. The best-placed driver of an Audi RS 5 DTM was Timo Scheider in sixth, who had started from pole position. In total, 87,000 fans attended the first race weekend.

Dirk Werner showed an incredible recovery. From 20th place on the starting grid, the 31-year old from Hanover moved up through the ranks to finish second. “That was an unbelievable race. I didn’t even dare to hope for this. I have overtaken so any cars. I think, not just the fastest driver, but the most clever and the fastest driver now wins races,” said Werner.

Christian Vietoris, who finished thid in the season opener with his DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé was also delighted after the race and said: “What a great race! I had more fun than ever. Even when one has more to do with the tyre decision and the DRS, this was just great.” Werner and Vietoris both scored their maiden podium finishes in the DTM. 

After starting from pole position, two times’ DTM champion Timo Scheider (Audi) missed out on the tactically right moment for a pit stop during a safety car intervention in the first part of the race and thus lost valuable positions. At the end, he still made his way up to finish sixth behind Briton Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz) and reigning DTM champion Bruno Spengler (BMW) from Canada. “Today, we got it completely wrong. During the safety car phase, we reacted too late. Such a mistake shouldn’t happen when we want to be in contention for the title. But I also know that this decision has to be made in a split second,” Scheider said.

Marco Wittmann (BMW) was the best novice in ninth place. Pascal Wehrlein and Daniel Juncadella (both Mercedes-Benz), who also drove their first DTM race, finished eleventh and twelfth respectively. The fourth DTM rookie, Timo Glock, drove a good race, but had to park his BMW on lap 18 as he lost the right rear wheel after a troublesome pit stop. Other drivers to retire were Mattias Ekström, Edoardo Mortara, Adrien Tambay (all Audi) and Robert Wickens (Mercedes-Benz).

The second race of the season will take place at Brands Hatch (GB), May 19. 

Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director: “Incredible – finishing first and second from the back and the front is just great. There were so many overtaking manoeuvres and position changes, that there probably will be no favourite in the next nine races either. The action has definitely been spiced up.”

Toto Wolff, head of motorsport Mercedes-Benz: “It was a difficult race. There is a lot to learn, particularly concerning the tyre strategy. Our young guns have proven themselves. Third and fourth place is a solid result. There were many overtaking manoeuvres. Surely, it is exciting for the fans to watch.”

Dieter Gass, head of DTM Audi: “Of course, we are disappointed. After first and fifth place on the grid, we had hoped for more. On the other hand, we were caught out by the fact that we only had two cars in the top ten, with which we then had problems. Not getting Timo in right away during the safety car phase wasn’t the right decision. All in all, there was plenty of action on the track today.”

The two times’ DTM champion is back – pole for Timo Scheider…

Hockenheim. The 2013 DTM season has started. With his Audi RS 5 DTM, Timo Scheider was fastest in qualifying for the season opener at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. The 2008 and 2009 DTM champion will be starting from pole position on Sunday. The 34-year old completed his lap of the 4.574 kilometres long track in 1:35.918 minutes and thus ended ahead of Brazilian Augusto Farfus (BMW) and Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz), who were second and third respectively.

For Scheider, it is already his eleventh pole in the DTM. “I am extremely happy. This is a perfect start into the season. Today, we have achieved a really good lap. Let’s wait and see how many good laps we can do in the race on Sunday,” Scheider said after qualifying, which started on a wet track after continuous rain. However, conditions improved steadily and the asphalt dried out towards the end.

Farfus, who will be starting alongside Scheider from the first row with his BMW M3 DTM, was also very upbeat with his qualifying result: “That was a difficult qualifying with changeable conditions. I got it together quite well and I am very happy with second place. Tomorrow, it will be exciting, especially with the new features, the option tyres and DRS.”

With his DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, Christian Vietoris came within 0.276 seconds of the fastest time of the day. Vietoris said: “We didn’t know where we are. I am happy with the result. The team has done a great job. In the final qualifying heat, I pushed, but unfortunately, Augusto and Farfus pushed a little bit more.” 

For Robert Wickens (Mercedes-Benz), qualifying ended with disappointment. For the first time in his DTM career, the Canadian made it into the final heat of the four-heat qualifying, but then, in the battle for first place, he crossed a white line of the track limit with all four wheels of his car, after which he was disallowed his lap time by race control. Fifth-placed Swede Mattias Ekström (Audi) was followed by the two title contenders of the previous year, Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz) and DTM champion Bruno Spengler (BMW) in sixth and seventh place respectively. “Seven was my starting number in 2012, so the result is not that bad when you look at it this way,” Spengler said with a smile. 

The youngest driver in DTM history, Pascal Wehrlein (Mercedes-Benz), showed an impressive performance. In his first-ever DTM qualifying, the 18-year old ended up eighth.

The DTM is booming and even three times’ Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel took the opportunity to watch first qualifying of the year from up close at the track. Like his fellow F1 drivers Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg, Vettel witnessed the qualifying premiere of Timo Glock (BMW), in which the ex-Formula 1 driver ended up in 15th place. “It is too bad that we didn’t end up more to the front. I felt really well in the car, but we have to learn to understand the tyres, especially in wet conditions,” said Glock. 

On Sunday, two technical novelties will be used in the race for the first time. The Drag Reduction System (DRS), which allows the driver to temporarily adjust their rear wing from the cockpit and thus increase their top speed, as well as the option tyres, which differs from the regular DTM tyre with a softer rubber compound and allows for 1 to 1.5 seconds faster lap times for a while. 

The first race of the season covers 42 laps and 192.108 kilometres and starts on Sunday at 13:30 hrs (CET). ARD is already broadcasting live from 13:15 hrs.

MARCO WITTMANN ON TOP IN FINAL DAY OF TESTING –

Barcelona – Marco Wittmann made for the final fastest lap time the of the official four-day ITR tests at Barcelona. On Friday, in perfect weather conditions with temperatures of about 21.5° C, the DTM rookie hat was the quickest driver at the Circuit de Catalunya. He set his fastest time as early as in the morning session by crossing the line of the circuit’s 2.977-kilometre version with his BMW M3 DTM in 1:06.451 minutes.

Second position on the time sheets of day four was secured by Pascal Wehrlein, who is about to contest his first season on the grid of the most popular international touring-car series – just as Wittmann. With his DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, 18-year old Wehrlein set a personal fastest lap time of 1:06.687 minutes and was the fastest in the afternoon session – but finished 0.235 seconds behind Wittmann, in the end. Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz) came third, with his personal fastest lap time of1:06,706 minutes, followed by the best Audi driver, Timo Scheider. The fastest lap time Scheider achieved with his RS 5 DTM (1:06,844 minutes) was 0.393 seconds slower than the one of Wittmann.

Thanks to Wittmann, BMW also secured one of the fastest lap times on the Barcelona time sheets. On the previous three days, the fastest lap times were secured by the two Mercedes-Benz drivers Robert Wickens (Tuesday/1:06.735 minutes) and Gary Paffett (Wednesday/1:06.149) as well as Audi’s new signing Jamie Green (Thursday/1:07.171). So, Paffett also proved to be the quickest of the entire four days of testing. While the fastest man on Friday also was the busiest: Marco Wittmann completed 220 laps, representing a total mileage of 654.94 kilometres, on a single day of testing at Barcelona.

Prior to the season kick-off, held on 05th May at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, the teams of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz will have another four days of testing for their preparations for the coming season. From 09th to 12th April, Hockenheim will be the venue of the second and final ITR tests, with the 09th April also representing the official DTM Media Day.

On the four days of the first official ITR tests, the teams and drivers gathered a lot of – predominantly positive – experiences with two technical innovations. The one innovation were the new Hankook option tyres and the other the new Drag Reduction System, DRS, that allows the drivers to change the adjustment of the rear wing for a certain amount of time to temporarily increase their top speed.

Quotes after day four:

Timo Scheider (Audi): “Being back at the wheel of a racing car after such a long time was fantastic. First of all I had to familiarise myself with the DTM car but I succeeded in doing so very well. It may sound like a standard comment but we completed 90 percent of our scheduled programme. Nonetheless, it is extremely difficult to make reliable assessments. It was sunny at warm, at times, and then again overcast and colder. Therefore, the track conditions differed a lot. On Friday afternoon I covered my first kilometres with the option tyres – and they represented a huge positive surprise. Driving the DTM car on these tyres is truly big fun. Afterwards, you just don’t want to switch back to the standard tyres. And the DRS also makes an impact. I think it was time for making some changes. The fans want to see overtaking manoeuvres and both the DRS and the option tyres will be helpful to achieve this goal.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW): “Contesting such a test with your new team is really nice. We used the time to get to know one another better – and I quickly found a good rhythm. I definitely will leave Barcelona with a lot of positive experiences under my belt. The option tyre is quick and rather consistent. And when you go out again on the standard tyres after a stint on the options you have to re-adapt. That’s an interesting challenge.”

Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz): “I had two rather positive days of testing. We had no technical problems whatsoever and consequently, we could make optimum use of the time by gaining a lot of important insights. And in this year, with the limited test time available to us, this is of particular importance. The crew also cooperated fantastically and did a great job. I’ve also got a very positive feeling regarding the DRS but at this point in time it’s difficult to say how big the advantage will be, in the end.”

AUDI LOCKS OUT TOP THREE AT ZANDVOORT – BATTLE FOR THE TITLE HOTS UP…

Zandvoort. The seventh DTM round of the season at Zandvoort in The Netherlands brought plenty of action. Intermittent rain, two safety-car phases and thrilling overtaking manoeuvres turned it into the most exciting race of the season. After 43 laps, Italian Edoardo Mortara emerged as the jubilant winner with his Audi A5 DTM. After his success at Spielberg, this was his second DTM victory of the year. His fellow Audi drivers Mike Rockenfeller from Germany and Swede Mattias Ekström followed in second and third place. Excitement is rising in the battle for the title: points’ leader Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz) and Bruno Spengler (BMW) finished seventh and sixth. The third title aspirant, Jamie Green (Mercedes-Benz) ended up fourth and overtook Spengler to claim second place in the drivers’ standings.

After the race, 25-year old Mortara said: “This was the best race of my life, a really tough battle with ’Rocky’. Conditions were incredible: rain, dry, then rain again. When you are driving in such conditions, you can get off the track on every lap.”

For Audi, the race started with a heart-stopping moment: on pole position, Timo Scheider stalled his engine at the start and dropped back to 14th place. Later on, the race was over for the two times’ DTM champion after the bonnet had come off his car. In the course of the race, there were numerous position changes at the front of the field. Rockenfeller led until lap 32, when eventual winner Mortara overtook him,

Brit Jamie Green started the race from sixth place on the grid and experienced 43 very turbulent laps. The 30-year old crossed the finish line in fourth position as the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver. “For me, this race was a topsy-turvy affair. At the start, it was very good, but then, unfortunately, our first stop was too slow. After that, I was stuck and couldn’t overtake. When the rain set in, I was back in the race again. All in all, fourth place is quite a good result,” the 30-year old said.

Behind Audi driver Adrien Tambay from France, Canadian Bruno Spengler finished sixth with his BMW M3 DTM. Having started the race from 18th place, the 29-year old showed a great recovery. “That was a very good race, even though I wasn’t able to show the full potential of the car. I am happy that I could make it to the finish, because it was really difficult out there. Sixth place is the best we could manage,” Spengler said.

For points’ leader Gary Paffett (Mercdes-Benz), the race was an emotional roller-coaster ride. From sixth place on the grid, the Brit even had made it up into the lead. When rain set in again on lap 28, Paffett and BMW driver Martin Tomczyk collided in the battle for fourth place. The wheels of Tomczyk’s car locked up, he couldn’t avoid Paffett and turned the Brit around. Paffett dropped back to twelfth, but with first-class overtaking manoeuvres, he still made it all the way up to finish seventh. Tomczyk parked his car and immediately made his way to the Mercedes-Benz pit wall stand to apologize to head of motorsport Norbert Haug, who accepted the apologies. The two BMW drivers Dirk Werner and Augusto Farfus from Brazil as well as Ralf Schumacher with the DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé rounded out the top ten.

In the drivers’ standings, Paffett remains in the lead with 109 points from Green with 93 and Spengler with 91 points. After his victory at Zandvoort, Mortara follows in fourth place with 74 points.

In total, 37,000 spectators attended the third DTM race of 2012 outside of Germany. The next round takes place at Oschersleben, September 16th.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of motorsport Audi: “This was an exciting race with a fierce battle between the three Audi teams. It is nice to see that the performance is there. Now, we are there again where we always want to be: capable of winning. Here at Zandvoort, we were strong as an entire team. I am happy for the guys who have been working hard to achieve this success.”

Norbert Haug, head of motorsport Mercedes-Benz: “Gary was on his way to a podium finish until he was turned around, but the damage is limited with seventh place after a great recovery. Paffett and Green in first and second place in the drivers’ standings with three races remaining are a good basis. Today, our speed was very good, but the conditions weren’t.”

Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport director: “One can sum up this race under ’maximum damage control’. Bruno and Augusto have done a tremendous job. I feel sorry for Martin. He was doing very well, but he misjudged the grip as the rain set in. It was a racing accident, in which Gary was involved, too. Fortunately, Gary was able to continue. All in all, it was a good race result after a mediocre qualifying.”

Audi locks out first five starting grid positions – title candidates are showing nerves

Zandvoort. Audi surprises the opposition: in qualifying for the seventh DTM round of the year at Zandvoort in The Netherlands, the brand from Ingolstadt presented itself in excellent shape. No less than five Audi A5 DTMs lock out the first five places on the starting grid. The 2008 and 2009 DTM champion, Timo Scheider, was fastest in qualifying. For the German, it is the first pole position of the season and the tenth of his career. The three title candidates showed nerves: points’ leader Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz) will start from eighth place, his main rival Bruno Spengler (BMW) in 18th and third-placed Jamie Green (Mercedes-Benz) from sixth position.

For Audi, it is the best DTM result of the year. Behind pole-sitter Scheider, his four fellow Audi drivers Mike Rockenfeller, Filipe Albuquerque, Edoardo Mortara and Mattias Ekström will be starting the race from second to fifth place. “I really had misty eyes in the car. In the team, we have been working very hard for months and we are now rewarded with pole. I have always kept faith in myself and I am particularly happy having claimed the fourth pole in total at my absolutely favourite track,” said Scheider.

Best-placed BMW driver of the day was Dirk Werner, who ended up seventh behind the fastest Mercedes-Benz driver, Jamie Green. Paffett, who is leading the drivers’ standings with 103 points and will be starting from eighth place, said after qualifying: “Unfortunately, we didn’t make it into the fourth qualifying heat, but given the circumstances, I am happy. The track seems to suit Audi very much, and unfortunately, I wasn’t able to use the full potential on a complete lap. Normally, our C-Coupé is very strong in the race and considering the weather forecast for Sunday, everything should be possible in the race.” Paffett’s fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Christian Vietoris and Audi driver Adrien Tambay from France rounded out the top ten.

Paffett’s fiercest rival Bruno Spengler gambled and lost. The Canadian, who is second in the drivers’ standings, 20 points down, drove one fast lap early in the first heat before returning to the pits, convinced that he would continue. “I thought, my time would be fast enough. However, conditions changed quickly and other drivers who were still on the track were able to improve. But worse things can happen. Now, I will try to make up positions from the back in the race and to score as many points as possible in the end,” said the 29-year old, who will be starting from 18th place following his retirement after the first qualifying heat.

The seventh round of the season covers 44 laps and 189.508 kilometres and will start on Sunday at 14.00 h (CET). ARD will be broadcasting live from 13.40 h

Di Resta reaches for the stars – pole in an action-packed qualifying.

Shanghai: Scot Paul Di Resta has secured himself the best position for the battle for the 2010 DTM title. The Mercedes-Benz driver did the best job in the action-packed qualifying of the DTM season finale at the narrow 2.465 kilometres long street circuit in Shanghai and will be starting from pole position on Sunday at 8.23 h (CET). British driver Gary Paffett will also be starting from the front row, but from second place into the 60 lap race.

Third in the drivers’ standings, Di Resta’s fellow Mercedes-Benz driver also still has title chances. Points’ leader Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz), however, will be facing a difficult task. In the first heat of the four-stage qualifying, the Canadian hit the barriers. Although his car could still be repaired, Spengler failed to improve his time and will only be starting from 17th place. Di Resta said about his fourth pole position of the current season: “It was a very difficult qualifying with little grip. I tried not to take too many risks. First place on the grid is the best position in the battle for the title, but at this track, that can change quickly. One has to be very careful.”

German Timo Scheider was the best-placed Audi driver in qualifying. The reigning DTM champion ended up fourth behind Briton Jamie Green with the 2008-spec AMG Mercedes C-Class. Scheider, who had a crash after the time of the third qualifying heat had elapsed, was sidelined from the fourth and final heat. “Crashing at 220 km/h is not a nice feeling. Fortunately, nothing happened to me. We are now working flat out to get the car ready in time for the race”, Scheider said after qualifying.

Scot David Coulthard (Mercedes-Benz) scored his best DTM qualifying result to date in sixth place.

The final qualifying of the year brought plenty of action. After the accident of points’ leader Spengler in the first qualifying heat, the session was stopped. According to the regulations, all 18 drivers moved up into the next heat. However, this session was stopped early as well due to a crash by DTM rookie Darryl O’Young (Audi) from Hong Kong. As a result, all the drivers had a chance to battle for grid positions in the third heat. The final session of the four fastest drivers was stopped after a crash by Green. Thus, the classification of the third qualifying heat is decisive for the starting grid positions on Sunday.

The eleventh and final DTM race of the year will cover 60 laps and 147.9 kilometres. The start is at 8:23 h (CET). ARD is broadcasting live from 8.05 h.
