F1weekly podcast #432 - June 6, 2010

Today we have an exclusive conversation with Fabio Leimer of Switzerland, now making his name in GP2 series.

21 year old Fabio Leimer has been on a winning track for a few years now. Last year he was International Formula Master Champion. In 2008, he was rookie of the year in the same series and was winning races in his rookie season in the series,  which is always impressive.

This year he is with Ocean Racing team of Tiago Monteiro and won Sunday’s sprint race in Barcelona where this conversation was recorded.

But first, a few words from his sponsor, Herr Rainer Gantenbein, Boss man of Bautro, a Swiss company based in Bern.

My thanks to both Rainer and Fabio and all the best in 2010 and beyond.

AND NOW FABIO LEIMER AND HIS STORY

F1weekly podcast # 431 - June 3, 2010

Maestro from Monterrey

Feature Interview: Esteban Gutierrez. Mas Rapido from Mexico

Man with the smile is Esteban Gutierrez, fresh from his victory in the GP3 race at Istanbul last Saturday, and now leading the championship in its inaugural season.

The young man from Monterrey started his motor racing career in grand style in Salt Lake City, in the 2007 Formula BMW US series, by taking pole positions for the first two races of his career. Since then he has been pepper quick, claiming Rookie of the Year honors before crossing the pond and drowning the competition in the 2008 Formula BMW Europe Championship with seven wins, six of them on the trot.

Josef Kaufmann ran both Nico Hulkenberg and Gutierrez in Formula BMW Europe and says Gutierrez is as quick as the German.

This is good news for motorsports fans south of the border as they have been waiting since the 1970 Belgian Grand Prix for a Mexican winner in Formula 1.

After a tough season in F3 Euro Series last year Gutierrez and his ART team, headed by Nicholas Todt, took the decision to enter the newly created GP3, the official feeder series to GP2, which in itself is billed as the official feeder series to the promised land.

Podcast 431 features an exclusive interview with this ‘el grande’ talented driver from Monterrey, Mexico. The conversation took place in Barcelona last month on the occasion of the opening round of the GP3 Series where Gutierrez was the only driver to be on the podium in both races of the weekend.

My thanks to Esteban Gutierrez for his time and his Manager Marks Granados for making this happen.

Please visit his website www.estebangtz.com for more information on his career and also www.gp3series.com for more information on the series, teams and drivers.

Special thanks to Ms. Amanda Hunt of GP3 Media for her kind assistance in granting F1Weekly media credentials.

Podcast number 430 Saturday Edition. The Josef Kaufmann Racing Special.

First of all my thanks to Josef and Lars Kaufmann for their fine German hospitality in Barcelona. Their team area was also my base of operation.

We were staying in the same hotel, not too far from the track.

They have three drivers in Formula BMW Europe this season, we call them Kaufmann Kids.

Robin Frijns

First interview is with their senior driver now in his second year in the series and a race winner in Barcelona, Dutch Master Robin Frijns.

Robin is looking to fly high this year by taking the championship. He also won a race at Silverstone in his rookie season. My thanks to Robin Frijns for his time. Please enjoy the conversation.

Hannes van Hasseldonk

Our second interview today is another Dutch treat, Hannes van Asseldonk. He was Benelux Rotax Max Senior champion in 2008. Last year he was in the top 10 of German Shifter Karting Championship. We wish him all the best in his rookie year of single seater racing.

Petri Suvanto

In 2006, Suvanto was Finnish Junior Champion in karting. He was also very quick and successful in international karting. Was awarded BMW Motorsport Scholarship for the 2010 season. He is with Gravity Management.

In Barcelona Petri Suvanto also struck a deal with F1weekly, details of which are coming up in the interview. Thank you Senor Suvanto.

Everything is big in Texas!

Now the big show comes to Austin. Full Throttle Production is on pole position to bring Formula One back to the United States. This weekend Formula One’s Turkish March takes place at Istanbul Park on the Asian side of this historical and beautiful city.

Red Bull looks as strong as Turkish coffee to continue their sweep of pole positions this year. Sebastian Vettel will be hoping “Randy Mandy” will get his 2010 campaign back on track after two back-to-back wins by teammate Mark Webber.

Two nil is the score at McLaren. Pussy Cat Doll will attend her first F1 race of the season, and that may be all the ‘motivation’ Lewis Hamilton needs to score his first win of the season.

Ferrari is celebrating their 800th Formula 1 start.

GP2. Four races have seen four different drivers. Davide Valsecchi is on pole position ahead of Pastor Maldonado for Saturday’s feature race.

GP3. Canadian star Robert Wickens leads the championship by a single point. Hot on his heels to give him a Turkish bath are ART teammates Esteban Gutierrez of Mexico and California kid Alexander Rossi who won the second race of the opening round in Barcelona.

The weekend may also reveal the tire supplier to replace Bridgestone.

500

Helio Castro Neves starts from his fourth pole position at the “Brickyard” and will be racing to history to become the fourth driver to drink milk four times. First three are AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears.

600

Charlotte Motor Speedway will host Nascar’s longest race. Ryan Newman from Indiana starts from pole.

F1weekly podcast # 429 - May 27, 2010

Motorsports Mantra

Commentary on F1 in Coyote land.

Greetings and Austin Powers regards. Here we go again, Formula 1 comes back to America to try yet another venue. Where Watkins Glen, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Sebring, names synonymous with motor racing failed to sustain the US Grand Prix, the Lone Star State gets another chance to lasso Formula Uno in the Union.

No venue has been announced and reports are a brand new purpose built track will host the Hee Haw Grand Prix. The Tex Mex cowboy behind this   “get out of Indy” deal is Tavo Hellmund, who has been racing in some division of Nascar after a brief foray in Europe. His papito was involved in promoting Indy Car races in Mexico City in the early eighties.

I had no idea Ken Anderson had family members south of the border.

Formula One will succeed in America, and very well I may add, if it is promoted for all the right reasons, first of all would be location which is very cosmopolitan, and is a place people would like to visit apart from being a Grand Prix venue.

I have yet to meet a person, American or Martian, who went to the Long Beach F1 race and came back disappointed. LA and Beverly Hills were in the hood and San Diego only 90 minutes away.

A street race in Florida will make a lot of sense, especially in early part of the year, escape the winter of North East and Europe for Florida Fresh F1.

And there is no shortage of other major markets, an F1 race on the Seattle waterfront could be very exciting, rain is always there and if it gets Bill Gates attention sponsorship worries would be solved once and for all.

Road America without any changes and before Herman Tilke is served any Miller Light by the locals is a better venue than several F1 circuits currently in use.

But I am sure there is more to the story than we know or are told. Perhaps in this climate of global financial meltdown the fine folks in Austin have a surplus of $200m to build a track, and that in a city which does not have a professional football, baseball or basketball team, to play host to sporting legends with names like Kovalainen and Karun. Glock and Grassi.

This deal and the players behind it look as sharp as Simon Gillet. Time will shave fact from fiction. Grand Prix or no Grand Prix in Austin, the Big E will walk away with a lot of Big M.

Final analysis: Hang em high if the GP is not delivered.

F1weekly podcast # 428 - May 23, 2010

Podcast  number 428 special edition INTERVIEW Richard Dutton of Fortec Motorsport

Mister Richard Dutton is boss man and founder of Fortec Motorsport, a very successful British racing team based in Daventry. The team was formed in 1996. In his racing days Mister Dutton raced against Eddie Jordan and our Nige in British F3.

This season Fortec Motorsports is fielding cars in five championships: World Series by Renault, British Formula 3, Formula Renault UK, Formula BMW Europe and Formula Renault BARC.

Montoya and Kovalainen drove for Fortec and Mister Dutton has a very high opinion of both these drivers.

This conversation took place at the Barcelona airport while we were waiting for our flight to Nice Sunday evening after the Spanish Grand Prix. My thanks to Mister Dutton for his time and wonderful stories, especially the ones at the bar.

And also many thanks for inviting me to be his guest next year in Monte Carlo.

Please enjoy the conversation and visit their website www.fortecmotorsport.com for more information on a winning team and their drivers.
