Faded Glory Gallery…

Arrows. The Shadow of a team. From an Italian financier to a Nigerian Prince, the team has seen it all except the checkered flag. Damon Hill came within a lap of giving the team their only success in the 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The team arrived in Formula 1 for the 1978 season after Jackie Oliver left the Shadow team with designer Tony Southgate and driver Riccardo Patrese. Incredibly, the Italian led the team’s second ever race, the South African Grand Prix, before being sidelined by blown engine. He scored the team’s first championship points in the next round at Long Beach.

The technical department saw the services of Ross Brawn, John Barnard and Iranian Eghbal Hamidy who designed the Orange-sponsored car for the 2000 season. The winless team’s final season was in 2002, by then it was owned by Tom Walkinshaw.

The photo shows Patrese heading for second place in the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix where his defensive driving in the closing laps brought him the wrath of home town hero Ronnie Peterson.
