Austin City Council Officially Endorses

Formula 1United States Grand Prix™

Affirmative Vote Advances Race Preparations at Circuit of the Americas™

AUSTIN, Texas – June 29, 2011 – Austin’s City Council voted today to officially endorse the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix event in 2012. Council Members deliberated on the issue for more than three weeks leading up to the vote and worked closely with representatives of Circuit of The Americas to craft an environmental agreement that is unprecedented for a world-class sports venue. “We appreciate the Council’s approval of the endorsement,” said Steve Sexton, President of Circuit of The Americas. “Austin is a unique community and the environmental provisions we worked together to craft with Council demonstrate our commitment to produce an event aligned with the values and vision of the City. This is a major step toward our vision of bringing the world to Austin to enjoy one of the most spectacular international events in sports. This partnership sets a new standard that every new sports or entertainment venue around the world can emulate.”

City Council’s official endorsement of the race clears the way for the Local Organizing Committee to utilize a state fund established by the Texas Legislature for the purpose of attracting and producing major events like the Super Bowl, NCAA Men’s Final Four and now the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. ‘I’m proud of the partnership between the City and Circuit of The Americas to develop and build what will be among the greenest, most high-tech sports and entertainment facilities anywhere,’ said Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell.

Circuit of The Americas, the world-class sports and entertainment facility under construction in southeast Travis County, will be among the most technologically and environmentally advanced venues in the world. Race organizers and a group of community environmentalists have devised a 54-point plan to position Circuit of The Americas as the “greenest” sporting facility in the Americas. The plan includes elements ranging from offsite transportation options and dedicated bicycle lane access to incorporation of a community garden area, water-conservation measures, and the planting of over 800 trees. In addition, the venue will promote and host alternative vehicle races.

Esteban Gutierrez

Winning Vector in Valencia. Mexican racing sensation Esteban Gutierrez scored the biggest win of his career on Sunday. The 19-year old from Monterrey dominated the sprint race to score his maiden win in the GP2 series, the official feeder series to Formula One.

Gutierrez is already under contract to Sauber F1 team. Sunday’s win will boost his confidence in the forthcoming races at traditional tracks, where his previous experience in Formula BMW and F3 Euro series will be an added advantage.

Gutierrez got his racing career going in high gear right from the start, starting his first ever single-seater event from pole position at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. He would go on to capture Rookie of the Year title in the 2007 Formula BMW US series.

In 2008, he competed in the European iteration of the same series and dominated the season with seven victories, six of these in a row. The following season he started an association with French ART team which continues to the current GP2 campaign.

The 2009 season saw Esteban endure a tough but learning experience in Formula 3 Euro Series. Visit to the top of the podium step eluded him but the driver and the team never lost faith in each other.

Then came GP3 in 2010.

The Nicholas Todt/Frederic Vasseur-owned ART team decided to enter the new series – official feeder series to GP2 – with Esteban as one of the three drivers.

In a talent laden field which included several championship winning drivers, most notably Canadian Robert Wickens, American Alexander Rossi and Italian Mirko Bortolotti, Gutierrez won more races (5) than any other driver on his way to championship glory, and was on the podium in more than half of the races.

The step-up to GP2 with the now re-named Lotus ART team provides him continued experience in a friendly and familiar environment with a very successful and professional operation.

A jubilant Gutierrez said on his website www.estebanracing.com “I am grateful to the team because we have improved the car very much and today we had a car to win the race, which helped me to be consistent and confident to turn our advantage into a win.

“Winning is a great motivation but at the same time we have to preserve our head cool because we have to keep in mind that I am a rookie and we are going to try and be more efficient and take advantage of our progress.

“I dedicate this win to my mom, whose birthday was last Friday. I am very grateful to my friends, my family, my girlfriend and my sponsors for their support in the good as well as the bad times. I also thank my fans because they are a very important part of my career.”

Gutierrez will now focus on his next race at Silverstone in July.

Vettle on track to the 2011 F1 world championship with victory in Valencia.

Race recap with Clark and Steve in the midweek podcast.

GP3′s Calado took his and reigning champions Lotus ART’s first win of 2011

Gutierrez sprints to Valencia victory takes maiden GP2 win.

Esteban Gutierrez has taken his first GP2 victory with an effortless display of raw speed to dominate this morning’s sprint race in Valencia, claiming the win by almost 13 seconds from Luiz Razia and Giedo van der Garde.

The Mexican’s biggest effort came at the start: he followed poleman Josef Kral off the line and was briefly side by side with Razia but held his nerve to hang onto P2. Behind the top three Sam Bird had made a good start but was hit by Romain Grosjean at turn 3: the Briton was forced to limp back to the pits for repairs while the Frenchman spun on his own at turn 5, leaving Rodolfo Gonzalez and Charles Pic nowhere to go but into (or over) his stricken car.

The inevitable safety car was only on track for one lap as the marshals quickly disposed of the broken vehicles: the restart by Kral was solid, but when he braked too late at the tight turn 4 Gutierrez and Razia were through and gone in a heartbeat, and soon had van der Garde and Clos to worry about. The pair went through the Czech driver at the hairpin next time through, but the lead pair were already gone.

The race now settled into its rhythm, with Gutierrez pulling away inch by inch and van der Garde pushing hard for the opportunity to catch up to title rival Grosjean’s points haul. On lap 14 Kral’s misery continued when he spun out of the race just before the bridge, cancelling in a second any chance of turning around his torrid weekend here last year.

And when the chequered flag dropped all eyes were on Gutierrez, who was visibly overjoyed to claim his first win in GP2. Razia held on from a late race charge to lead van der Garde across the line by a second, with Davide Valsecchi easing past Dani Clos at the end of the rear straight in the closing laps, and the Spaniard just holding off Michael Herck at the line for fifth place.

Despite his difficult race Grosjean holds onto the lead in the driver’s championship by a point from van der Garde, 34 to 33, with Valsecchi 3 points back on 30 ahead of Bird on 27 and Pic on 24, while Addax leave their home circuit with a comfortable lead over Team AirAsia, 57 points to 41, with iSport in third on 35 points, one ahead of Dams.
